{"schemaVersion":"jobsearcher.job.v1","id":"c808f16baf49078d5eb0d475","url":"https://jobsearcher.com/jobs/c808f16baf49078d5eb0d475","canonicalUrl":"https://jobsearcher.com/jobs/c808f16baf49078d5eb0d475","title":"Applied Mathematics Statistics Intern","description":"Applied Optimization (AO) Job Description\nJob Title: Applied Mathematics & Statistics Intern Reports to: Principal Scientist\n\nFLSA Status: Part-Time (Non-Exempt) Department: Space Science\n\nPosition Objective\n\nTo support an interdisciplinary team that develops new generation scientific algorithms in space science through mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques, and implements these into numerical analysis and software deliverables to our customers.\n\nEssential Functions\n\nSupport the development and testing of mathematical models of real data\n\nSupport the implementation of mathematical formulae and algorithms into software code\n\nSupport hypothesis testing through statistical analysis methods to analyze and interpret effectiveness of algorithms\n\nSupport modifying and debugging code\n\nPerform verification and quality assurance for new and existing mathematical algorithms and code\n\nHelp prepare and review presentations, papers, and reports to convey statistical analysis, mathematical modeling, and software development to customers\n\nEnsure accuracy of your work and follow procedures in documenting work; maintain notebook of daily activities and provide weekly reports of work\n\nOther duties as assigned\n\nRequired Qualifications\n\nUndergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled in a program related to the field of mathematics or statistics with a superior academic record\n\nBasic understanding of software development and knowledge of various programming languages\n\nAttention to detail and effective time and schedule management skills\n\nEffective organizing, planning, and problem-solving skills\n\nAbility to adapt within a small team to support evolving customer requirements\n\nAbility to adapt between and balance work falling under a range of research topics including additive manufacturing, space research, and optics\n\nAbility to execute instructions and communication in written, oral, and diagram form\n\nDemonstrated strong writing, fact-gathering, and analytical skills\n\nBasic computer skills including, but not necessarily limited to, Microsoft Office products (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)\n\nPreferred Qualifications\n\nCollege sophomore or higher with cumulative GPA (Grade Point Average) of 3.5 or higher\n\nA minor or dual degree in computer science or computer engineering\n\nTheoretic knowledge and experience of Agile software development practices and UML\n\nKnowledge or experience in Python, MATLAB, and/or C++ programming languages\n\nKnowledge or experience in Git management and use for collaborative projects\n\nExperience with machine learning, artificial intelligence, and numerical optimization techniques\n\nCitizenship/Security Clearance Requirements\n\nU.S. Citizen or Green Card Holder\n\nMay be required to obtain and maintain U.S. Government Security Clearance\n\nAbout Our Internships\n\nHours: The internship is a part-time, year-round position that requires a minimum of sixteen hours per week of work. The hours are flexible and they can change from one semester to another based on the student’s class schedule.
