The dentist is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day functioning of the dental clinic including infection control and environmental health and safety.\n\nREQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE\n\nGraduate from a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) program located in a State, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory accredited by the American Dental Association, Commission on Dental Accreditation in the year of the applicant’s graduation.\nOne year of recent work experience in the United States as a licensed practicing dentist.\nExperience in Oral Surgery is mandatory.\n\nREQUIRED LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION\n\nHold and maintain a full, current and unrestricted license to practice dentistry independently in the state in which the duty station is located. The license must be maintained in a permanent, full, and unrestricted status during the term of employment.\nMaintains BLS for Healthcare Providers certification through the American Heart Association.\nDEA license required\n\nATTRIBUTES AND PROFESSIONAL QUALITIES\n\nDemonstrates strong problem solving, judgment, and decision-making skills.\nDemonstrates strong leadership skills.\nDemonstrates strong interpersonal skills.\nDemonstrates strong organizational and time management skills.\nDemonstrates strong oral and written communication skills.\nDemonstrates integrity and honesty.\nDemonstrates cultural competency.\nVerbal and written proficiency in Spanish (preferred, not required).\nExperience in a detention/correctional or residential healthcare setting (preferred, not required).\n\nREQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES\n\nBroad functions of dentistry: diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and emergency care.\nKnowledge of dental science e.g. oral anatomy, oral physiology and histology, restorative dentistry, periodontics, endodontics, prosthodontics, and oral surgery (note: strong oral surgery skills and experience are required).\nMust adhere to requirements for safety, infection control, quality assurance, clinical documentation, and data management.\nAbility to properly use equipment, materials and supplies in diagnostic and treatment procedures.\nAbility to respond to and/or coordinate response to medical emergencies.\nCompletes and passes all competency testing initially, annually, and as needed.\nCompletes all initial, annual and ad hoc training as required/assigned.\nAbility to work in a multi-cultural and multi-lingual environment.\nAbility to adapt to sudden changes in schedules and flexibility in work requirements.\nAbility to communicate proficiently in English (verbal and written).\nAbility to establish and maintain positive working relationships in a multidisciplinary environment.\nAbility to navigate in an electronic work environment including electronic health records, web-based training and communications.\nKnowledge of, and moderate proficiency in, common Microsoft Office programs, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and SharePoint.\nKnowledge of regulations on the confidentiality of medical records and information (HIPAA/Privacy Act) and applicable accreditation standards.\n\nMAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES\n\nProvides primary oral health care including examination, diagnosis and treatment of patients within prescribed policies and accreditation standards.\nAssures strict sharps and instruments control/accountability through maintenance of prescribed twice daily logging and counts.\nObserves radiation safety protocols, EPA Radiation Protection Guidance and recommendations, National Council on Radiation Protection guidance, and American Dental Association recommendations/guidance when exposing dental radiographs to assure optimal patient and provider safety.\nAssures optimum sterilization and/or disinfection procedures including instrument processing and spore testing in accordance with prescribed policies and CDC guidelines.\nRefers patients to dental specialists through the managed care program for consultation and/or treatment when appropriate.\nPrescribes and/or dispenses required medication to patients.\nAssists with day to day technical oversight of the dental auxiliary staff and provides input to the Local Dental Unit Chief, HSA, and/or designated supervisory authority.\nServes as a resource to local facility staff on dental health issues.\nProvides annual dental training to local medical staff.\nCollects and organizes accurate dental data and submits to the Regional Dental Consultant in a timely manner.\nAttends monthly dental teleconferences, organizational and local duty station meetings.\nMay periodically be asked to travel to provide dental care at other sites.\nPerforms duties in support of the local medical unit and/or Dental Program (e.g.\nequipment maintenance, supply/equipment acquisition, performance improvement initiatives, training program development, etc).\nAdheres to and maintains awareness of all policies, procedures, directives, operational memoranda and accreditation standards.\n\nPHYSICAL DEMANDS\n\nThis work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking or jogging over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; or recurring lifting of moderately heavy patients or equipment.\n\nCITIZENSHIP REQUIREMENTS AND VERIFICATION:\n\nThe Prime Contract requires that employees and representatives performing work on the Project be United States citizens or foreign citizens who are legally authorized to work in the United States.
