This job participates in on-the-job training.\nEssential Job Accountabilities\nMoves levers, depresses pedals, turns handwheels, and pushes throttle to control and guide machine.\nDrives machine in successive overlapping passes over surface to be compacted.\nDetermines speed and direction of machine, based on knowledge of compressibility of material under changing temperatures, so that ridges are not formed by excessive pressure.\nPushes hand roller and pounds surfaces, using hand tamp, or guides portable power roller over areas not accessible to road roller.\nMay be designated according to surface rolled as Road-Roller Operator, Hot Mix; Subgrade-Roller Operator; or according to source of power used as Diesel-Roller Operator; Gas-Roller Operator.\nEducation\nHigh School Diploma, GED or equivalent years of experience\nCertification\nProper certification required\nWork Experience\nAppropriate training and experience required\nKnowledge, Skills and Abilities\nWorkers should be able to:\nRead engineering drawing\nPractice good safety habits\nWork in dusty or dirty surroundings\nFollow instructions and meet set standards\nJudge distances and slopes accurately\nMake decisions based on verifiable standards.\nPhysically, workers must be able to:\nStoop, bend, and crouch\nUse hands, arms, and legs fully\nSee well (either naturally or with correction)\nLift up to 50 pounds, with frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.\nAbout Granite Construction Incorporated\nGranite Construction Incorporated is a member of the S&P 400 Index and is the parent company of Granite Construction Company, one of the nation's largest heavy civil contractors and construction materials producers.
