THIS IS AN INTERNAL JOB POSTING OPEN ONLY TO CURRENT TOWN OF BERTHOUD EMPLOYEESSummaryUnder the direct supervision of the Town Forester & Open Space Supervisor and the Open Space Lead, the Open Space Tech I-III position is to assist in maintaining open space, natural areas, bike park, ornamental beds and trails within the Town of BerthoudHOURS. Monday through Thursday 7AM- 5:30PM and additional hours as necessary to meet the needs of the Town of Berthoud.Additional Hours: Will be required to perform on-call duty, work weekends, holidays, and overtime as necessary to meet the needs of the Town of BerthoudEssential Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The Town may change these duties at any time.Performs technical open space maintenance, repair, and land management duties including but not limited to mowing, weed trimming, noxious species mitigation, fertilization, seeding, irrigation, fence repair, and litter controlPerforms trail maintenance including but not limited to trail design, installation, mapping, upkeep, and repairMay supervise and train other staff and seasonals on Open Space duties and assignmentsAssists with Bike Park trail maintenance projects as neededAssists in pond, lake, and reservoir maintenance including but not limited to cattail control, algae and muck control, water dying, fish stocking, litter control, dock inspections and repair, and aeration pump upkeepAssists in wetland restoration and wildlife habitat preservationAssists in installing and maintaining interpretive/educational signageOperates and maintains open space related equipment including but not limited to Town vehicles, truck and trailer, slope mowers, tractors, front-end loaders, skid steers, UTV’s, etc.Safely and properly operates and maintains power equipment and other open space related power tools including by not limited to chainsaws, weed trimmers, backpack blowers, backpack sprayers, etc.Assists in maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing irrigation drip line systems for Town owned and maintained trees located in open space, natural areas, and along trail systemsAssists in maintaining of the Town’s xeriscape gardenProfessionally communicate and conduct consultations to the public – in person, on the phone, and via email – regarding open space, natural area, and trail issues, concerns, and management needsPerforms snow removal on Town owned and maintained sidewalks and trailsAssists in forestry operations including tree maintenance, removal, and plantingAssists in hanging banners, American flags, and Christmas lighting/decorations throughout Town parks and along Mountain AvenueAssists other departments including Parks and Recreation Staff with miscellaneous projects and operations including event set upsAbility to work on-call, holidays, and weekends as neededOther duties as may be assigned by Public Works Operations ManagerOther Duties and Responsibilities: The below list is intended to be illustrative of additional responsibilities of the position and not all encompassing. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.Native grass, tree, and shrub identification and nomenclature for species of the Front Range of ColoradoComprehensive knowledge of native grass, tree, and shrub biology and physiologyExperience using GIS devices and mapping softwareAbility to meet departmental goals, and establishes a cooperative working relationship with other employees, departments, and the general publicAbility to soundly communicate both verbally and in writingAbility to resolve conflicts, utilizing various problem-solving techniquesAbility to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manualsAbility to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule formPerform all job duties in a safe mannerAbility to stay calm under stressful situationsPrevious experience in Parks & Recreation maintenancePrevious experience in forestry maintenance operations including pruning, removal, and plantingAbility to communicate effectively in person; over the phone; in email and writingEducationHigh School Diploma/GED Required4 year degree in Natural Resources, Forestry, Biology, or a closely related field preferred but not requiredWork ExperienceTechnician I- Preferred 1 or more years of experience in open space management with the Town of BerthoudTechnician II - Required 1 to 2 or more years of experience in open space management with the Town of BerthoudTechnician III - Required 2 to 4 or more years of experience in open space management with the Town of BerthoudCertificates And LicensesTechnician IA valid Colorado Driver’s license (Class C) and evidence of insurability is requiredCPR/First Aid Certification or ability to obtain within 12 monthsComplete in-house equipment trainingsComplete in-house CIRSA safety trainings CDOT Flagger training or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment Completed OSHA 10 training within 12 months of employmentTechnician II -In addition to the requirements listed above, the Technician II will have increased responsibility and ability to use and maintain all of the open space department equipment, and be able to train new staff on all open space equipment and proceduresColorado Certified Operator Pesticide Applicators License (Categories 206 and 207) Technician III - In addition to the requirements listed above, the Technician III will have increased responsibility.NALP National Landscape Management Certificate or comparable program approved by the Town of Berthoud.Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
