Incumbents perform manual tasks and operate a variety of power tools and medium to heavy-duty automotive and related equipment. Duties may include giving guidance and direction to lower-level maintenance workers and supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the assigned Supervisor. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed.Performs non-journey level work in landscape, irrigation, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, concrete, painting and other similar maintenance and repair trades.Operates a variety of tools and equipment related to the area of assignment.Responds to emergency requests during and after working hours.May act as lead worker and have supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the assigned supervisor.Performs Other Related Work As Required.When assigned to Streets and Storm Drains:Manual labor tasks in the maintenance, repair and minor construction of streets, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, traffic signs, and channels and related facilities.Performs concrete installation as related to curbs, sidewalks, concrete pads, culverts and walkways.Performs asphalt installations including complete residential paving rehabilitation projects.Inspects and maintains drainage facilities.Operates Vactor truck, backhoe, paving machine, paving roller, ten wheel dump truck, grinding machine, loader/grader and street sweeper as it relates to streets and storm drains maintenance.When Assigned To Traffic Signs And MarkingsStripes streets, lays out and paints traffic lines and turn pockets according to specifications.Installs and maintains traffic and street signs.When Assigned To Graffiti AbatementRemoves or conceals graffiti on public and private property using a variety of equipment and chemicals/solvents.Paints over graffiti using appropriate paints; match and mixes paints; determines the appropriate paint-color, materials, equipment, and supplies needed to complete each job.Performs cleaning using pressure washer.Maintains log of inspections, daily inspections findings and graffiti removal activities performed.Coordinates persons assigned to graffiti removal who are performing mandated community service hours.Maintains related records, inventory and procures materials needed for graffiti abatement activities.When Assigned To Street SweepingSweeps City streets and rebuilds sweeper brooms.Operates a regenerative air vacuum street sweeper, backhoe and skip loader, ten wheel dump truck and other tools, equipment and trucks as it relates to clean up, collection and removal of debris, spills, vehicle accidents in road ways, catch basin and storm drains.Removal/replacement of damaged signs.Performs trash receptacle and bus stop maintenance.When Assigned To Parks/ParkwaysPerforms grounds keeping, sprinkler system installation and repair.Prepares and repairs ball fields.Repairs park building.Performs minor plumbing installation and repair.Trims, plants, shapes and removes trees and shrubs.Qualification GuidelinesEducation, Training And/Or ExperienceA typical way to obtain the requisite knowledge and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of this classification is as follows:Graduation from high school or equivalent.Two (2) years experience in performing the manual laboring tasks and tool and equipment use operation which provide a working familiarity with the work of the area of assignment.An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the desired knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform essential functions may also be considered.License And/Or CertificatePossession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Class C California Driver's License, or higher, before the date of appointment is required. A Class B, or higher, license with necessary endorsements may be required for specific assignments.
