Assist with the daily preparation\nand clean up of lunches and snacks, assist staff in monitoring children on the playground and\naccompany teachers and children on field trips. Promote health, safety, nutrition and the education of\nthe children in the classroom.\n\nNutrition:\nAs the single cook/custodian, be responsible for preparing breakfast, lunch and a snack for the Head\nStart center and be responsible for the cleanliness of the kitchen, all areas used for food preparation,\nand overall cleanliness of the Head Start center. Or, as an additional cook/custodian, assist and\ncooperate in a supportive role to the cook in carrying out nutrition activities for a Head Start center.\nAssist with meal planning and preparation, maintenance of food service areas, and participate in\nproviding meals and snacks to children and assist with cleanliness of the kitchen, all areas used for\nfood preparation, and overall cleanliness of the Head Start center.\n\nTransportation:\nAssist and cooperate in a supportive role to the Head Start bus driver in providing safe and punctual\ntransportation to and from classroom sites. Observe and monitor behavior of children, interact with\nparents and staff to promote the well-being of children.\nUnderstand the responsibility of being a mandated reporter for Child Abuse and Neglect. Read and\nunderstand the Child Abuse and Neglect reporting policy.\n\nDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:\nAs assigned by site supervisor, relevant to component area.\n\nKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:\n1. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.\n2. Read Orientation Manual for each component area.\n3. Agree to Standards of Conduct and sign Conduct Agreement.\n4. Sign Confidentiality Statement.\n5. Obtain initial medical exam and TB assessment within 30 days of employment. Complete a\nmedical exam and TB assessment every five years following initial employment.\n6. Pass background screen, child abuse/neglect screen, drug screen, and be subject to random\ndrug testing.\n7. Maintain conduct that promotes a positive image to staff, parents, agency and community.\n8. Understand responsibility of being a mandated reporter for Child Abuse and Neglect. Read and\nunderstand Child Abuse and Neglect Policy. Failure to follow reporting procedures, including\nincidents involving other staff members, may result in termination.\n\nAdditional requirements:\nPossess personal qualifications: emotional maturity, willingness to cooperate with the standards of\nthe program, respect for children and adults, flexibility, patience, good personal hygiene, and physical\nand mental health which does not interfere with responsibilities. Must have good verbal\ncommunication skills and visual ability to observe children. Ability to fulfill responsibilities under\npressure, including during emergencies.\n\nWorking Conditions:\nRisk of exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. Risk involved with travel on main highways, side\nstreets and rural roads during the transportation of children. Risk of exposure to communicable\ndiseases. Must be able to lift 55 pounds, many times a day, climb into the school bus, bend, kneel\nand squat frequently. Job requires standing for long periods of time, as well as stooping, squatting,\nrunning; and sitting in child sized chairs and/or on the floor.\nThe above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by a\nperson in this position.
