This role serves as a senior technical resource in hydrographic data acquisition, processing, and quality control, ensuring surveys meet or exceed client, regulatory, and industry standards. Leads a team of junior staff, supports project planning and execution, and contributes to continuous improvement of survey methodologies, safety, and data quality.\nResponsibilities\nLeadership and Direction\n\nIndependently plan and execute hydrographic survey operations for moderate to highly complex projects.\n\nServe as a technical resource and mentor to Hydrographers and Survey Technicians.\n\nSupport Project Managers with technical input, scope development, schedules, and cost estimates.\n\nPromote adherence to safety, quality, and regulatory requirements across field and office activities.\n\nAt the Operational and Company Level\n\nPlan and oversee hydrographic survey operations including vessel selection, equipment configuration, and survey line planning.\n\nRepresent and market Bowman's capabilities to establish new clients and enhance relationships.\n\nOperate and supervise the use of hydrographic survey equipment such as:\n\nMultibeam and single beam echosounders\n\nGNSS/INS positioning systems\n\nSound velocity profilers and tide gauges\n\nEnsure surveys comply with applicable standards (e.g., NOAA, USACE, IHO S-44, state and local requirements).\n\nProvide advanced data processing, analysis, and quality control using industry-standard software.\n\nTroubleshoot equipment, survey methods, and data quality issues in the field and office.\n\nCoordinate with clients, regulatory agencies, and internal teams to resolve technical questions and survey constraints.\n\nDo the Work\n\nConduct hydrographic data acquisition in marine, coastal, riverine, and inland environments.\n\nProcess, analyze, and validate bathymetric and positioning data to produce final deliverables.\n\nPrepare technical reports, survey metadata, and documentation supporting project deliverables.\n\nReview and certify survey data accuracy, completeness, and compliance with specifications.\n\nSupport proposal development with technical narratives and input on survey approaches.\n\nContribute to development and refinement of standard operating procedures and best practices.\n\nDevelop promotional concepts and new client business opportunities in all areas of service and all geographic locations.\n\nSuccess Metrics and Competencies\n\nAbility to work both independently and within a team environment.\n\nHigh degree of discretion and ability to manage highly confidential information.\n\nHighly motivated and problem-solving attitude.\n\nStrong marketing/business development skills and mindset.\n\nStrong sense of urgency in responding to constituents.\n\nEffective verbal and written communication skills.\n\nStrong work ethic and commitment to quality.\n\nSelf-reliance and ability to operate independently with limited direction.\n\nCommitment to promoting the reputation of the company through quality of work.\n\nAspirations to grow professionally and advance within the company.\n\nEffective working relationship with internal leaders and peers, as well as external clients.\n\nCommitment to becoming a \"citizen\" of the broader organization, breaking down barriers and silos.\n\nCommitment to working in partnership with others inside and outside the organization.\n\nAbility to effectively manage multiple time-sensitive tasks.\n\nDelivery of accurate, compliant hydrographic survey data on schedule and within budget.\n\nQualifications\n\nBachelor's degree in Hydrography, Geomatics, Surveying, Oceanography, Civil Engineering, or a related field required.\n\nEight or more (8+) years of progressively responsible hydrographic survey experience.\n\nProfessional hydrographic certification required (e.g., Certified Hydrographer (CH), IHO Category A or B, or equivalent).\n\nExperience leading field crews and overseeing complex survey projects preferred.\n\nValid driver's license required; boating certifications/DOT license preferred.\n\nAbout Bowman\nAre you ready to build a career that makes a lasting impact?
