The position is temporary and contingent on student enrollment and medical needs. The summer school program will run from July 6 to July 23, with a workday of 4 hours. School nurses will be responsible for providing health services to meet the medical needs of students. Bachelors Degree preferred./liliActive license as a registered nurse in the state of Maryland./liliCurrent American Heart Association certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (AED) for health care providers./li/ulpKnowledge, Abilities, and Skills:/pulliLeadership skills to function as the team leader in the school setting/liliExcellent written and verbal communication skills/liliAptitude to operate a variety of computer and audio-visual devices/equipment/liliSuch alternatives to the above qualifications as the Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable/li/ulpEssential Job Functions, Responsibilities, and Duties:/polliPromotes and protects the optimal health status of children/liliConducts health assessments/liulliObtains a health and developmental history/liliScreens and evaluates findings or deficits of state-mandated screenings, i.e. vision and hearing/liliObserves the child for developmental patterns in making nursing assessment and nursing diagnosis/liliIdentifies deviant health findings/li/ulliDevelops and implements a health plan/liulliInterprets the health status of students to parents and school personnel/liliInitiates referrals to parents, school personnel and community health resources for intervention, remediation, and follow-through/liliProvides ongoing health counseling with students, parents, and school personnel/liliRecommends and helps to implement modification of school programs to meet students health needs/liliUtilizes existing health resources to provide appropriate care to students/li/ulliMaintains, evaluates, and interprets health data to meet the individual needs of students/liliProvides clinical nursing services as authorized by the Maryland Nurse Practice Act/liliPlans and implements school health management protocols for the child with special health needs/liliDevelops guidelines and provides for crisis intervention, acute illness, injury, and emotional disturbances/liliParticipates as a member of the schools emergency preparedness/crisis intervention team/liliPromotes prevention and control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs; assists in the early surveillance, detection, and reporting of contagious diseases/liliProvides oversight of licensure status and practice of other health service providers of lower licensure in applicable situations and delegates certain nursing functions to appropriate staff/liliRecommends provisions for a school environment conducive to learning/liliIdentifies and reports school environmental concerns and issues/liliWorks with administration, faculty, and staff on remediation of issues/liliProvides health education/liliProvides direct health education and health counseling to assist students and families in making health and lifestyle decisions/liliServes as a resource person to the classroom teacher and supervisor in health instruction/liliParticipates in health education, directly and indirectly, by teaching persons to become more assertive health consumers and to assume greater responsibility for their own health/liliCounsels students concerning problems, at-risk behaviors, mental health issues, and substance abuse to facilitate responsible decision-making practices/liliActs as a resource person in promoting health careers/liliProvides health counseling for staff/liliFunctions as an integral member of the school interdisciplinary team.
