Committed to principles of equity, collaboration, and centering frontline communities in environmental policy, we operate statewide to hold polluters accountable, promote innovative climate justice initiatives, enhance public health protections, and support communities most impacted by environmental challenges.We are a dedicated team of 11 staff members in the process of negotiating a progressive union contract, working within a dynamic, values-based environment. We emphasize an organizational culture founded on principles of continuous learning, transparency, compassion, and accountability.Position Overview:The Program Director provides strategic leadership, operational management, and hands-on oversight of Beyond Toxics' environmental justice programmatic portfolio. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Program Director oversees a team of 5 program staff and serves as a key member of the organization's leadership team.The ideal candidate brings a deep experience in environmental justice, policy and advocacy, lobbying, community organizing, or related fields; a track record of effective staff supervision; and the ability to manage complex, multi-funder programs while maintaining strong external relationships and coalition representation.Essential FunctionsCore ResponsibilitiesProvide strategic oversight of the Beyond Toxic's full program portfolio including a strong policy and advocacy presence at the local and state levelsLead programmatic planning, implementation, and evaluation processes; ensures programs are meeting grant deliverables and organizational goalsCreate and track program budgets in coordination with the Executive Director, contribute to grant reporting and funding proposalsWork proactively with HR, Communications, and Development teams to ensure timely planning and effective communication across departmentsIdentify opportunities to strengthen program impact and proactively integrate feedback into program designStaff Supervision & Development:Directly supervises program staff including community organizers, policy/program coordinators and technical rolesProvide regular supervision, goal-setting, performance feedback, and professional development support in a unionized work environment.Foster a team culture of support, accountability, collaboration, and work-life balanceCollaborate with the Executive Director and HR Manager on hiring, onboarding, and personnel mattersCoalition & External Relations:Represent Beyond Toxics in coalitions, partnerships, stakeholder groups, and with the state legislature and rulemaking advisory committees.Build and maintain strong relationships with community partners, government agencies, funders, partner organizations and stakeholders.Serve as an organizational spokesperson in community and public settings as neededOrganizational LeadershipParticipate actively as a member of the leadership team; contribute to team development and organizational culture-buildingCollaborate with the Executive Director in strategic and annual planning and overall programmatic developmentContribute to a positive, inclusive organization culture aligned with organizational valuesMinimum QualificationsBachelor's Degree in environmental studies, public policy, public health, social sciences or related field or equivalent experienceMinimum of 5+ years of experience in nonprofit program management preferably in environmental justice, advocacy, community organizing, or related fieldExperience supervising and overseeing teams or projects effectivelyStrong project management skills with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlinesExperience managing grant and donor-funded programsCoalition or multi-organizational partnership experienceExcellent written and verbal communication skillsComfortable presenting to diverse audiences and skilled at navigating complex or challenging conversationsDemonstrated commitment and experience working with and behalf of lower income, BIPOC, and frontline communities most impacted by climate change and environmental harms.Strong commitment to environmental justice values and Beyond Toxic's missionPreferred QualificationsMaster's Degree in environmental studies, public policy, public health, social sciences, or a related field or equivalent experience.Familiarity with Beyond Toxics' current programmatic areas or related workExperience working in a unionized work environmentLocal and state policy and advocacy expertiseBilingual English/SpanishSupervisory responsibilitiesThe Program Director currently supervises five Bargaining Unit employees, three full-time, two part-time:Environmental and Justice LiaisonEnvironmental Justice OrganizerEcosystems and Communities Project ManagerYouth Education CoordinatorGIS Analyst and Programs CoordinatorPhysical RequirementsProlonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds on occasion.Required TravelOccasional travel (less than 20%) may be required for trainings or meetings.Additional Eligibility RequirementsEmployment is contingent upon the successful completion of a comprehensive background check, which may include criminal history, education verification, motor vehicle history and employment verification including professional references.In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire including submitting required documents within three days of hire.EEO StatementBeyond Toxics recognizes that a diverse range of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills strengthens our organization and enhances our effectiveness.
