Senior Backend Engineer – Pulse Nexus PlatformLocation: Chicago, IL (Local candidates preferred or candidates willing to travel to Chicago on a need basis) Employment Type: Contract / Full-TimeJob SummaryWe are seeking a highly skilled and hands-on Senior Backend Engineer to serve as the technical anchor for the Pulse Nexus platform. This role will lead the design, development, and implementation of a scalable workflow engine that powers the six-phase ELT Deck Automation process. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in Python backend development, REST API architecture, cloud-hosted services (AWS preferred), and enterprise-grade system design.This position requires a self-driven engineer who can independently make architecture decisions, identify technical risks proactively, and drive development efforts with minimal supervision. The candidate must be comfortable working in fast-paced environments and delivering production-ready solutions within aggressive timelines.Key ResponsibilitiesDesign and develop scalable backend systems for the Pulse Nexus platform.Build and maintain the workflow engine supporting the six-phase ELT Deck Automation lifecycle.Develop robust RESTful APIs and define API contracts, standards, and SLAs.Migrate the existing Proof-of-Concept (POC) APIs from internal infrastructure to a secure, production-hosted cloud environment.Architect and implement cloud-native backend solutions using AWS services.Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product managers, business stakeholders, and frontend teams.Identify technical risks, bottlenecks, and performance issues early and provide scalable solutions.Ensure system reliability, scalability, security, and maintainability.Participate in architecture reviews, code reviews, and technical design discussions.Create technical documentation, deployment strategies, and operational best practices.Drive backend engineering standards and mentor junior developers when required.Required Skills & Qualifications8+ years of backend software engineering experience.Strong expertise in Python development.Hands-on experience designing and developing REST APIs and microservices.Strong experience with AWS cloud services and production deployments.Experience building scalable workflow engines, automation platforms, or enterprise backend systems.Solid understanding of system architecture, API lifecycle management, and distributed systems.Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and orchestration tools like Kubernetes is a plus.Strong knowledge of database technologies (SQL/NoSQL).Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps best practices.Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.Ability to work independently and take ownership of technical decisions.Preferred QualificationsExperience migrating applications from POC to production environments.Exposure to enterprise workflow automation platforms.Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies.Prior experience working in high-visibility enterprise programs.Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.Nice to HaveMicroservices architecture experienceKubernetes / DockerTerraform or Infrastructure as CodeEvent-driven architectureMessaging systems such as Kafka or RabbitMQ
