St Louis Ave., Chicago, IL 60624\n\nPOSITION SUMMARY\nThe Controller is responsible for the overall management of the fiscal operations of Breakthrough. This position works to ensure fiscal accountability and responsible stewardship of the organization’s resources throughout the organization.\n\nESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / FUNCTIONS\nFiscal\nSupervising the Accounting Coordinator and Financial Analyst, ensures efficient and effective management of financial operations, including accounts payable, payroll and other accounting functions. Other duties include but are not limited to:\nOversee annual budget process in conjunction with the CAO and Executive Leadership Team\nOversee relationship with outside accounting firm\nServe as Lead for Strategic Project to assess overall fiscal operations, including accounting forms and systems, identifying and implementing process improvement ideas in conjunction with the CAO.\nEnsure Uniform Guidance compliance on federally funded contracts\nReview monthly program financial reports prepared by the Financial Analyst, investigating significant budget to actual variances and working with Chief Program Officers and Program Directors to answer any questions.\nProvide monthly financial reports for review by the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors.\nReview & document fiscal controls annually and as needed throughout the course of the fiscal year.\nReview and approve purchase orders and invoices for payment, periodically testing accounts payable for accuracy in coding expenses to appropriate line items\nReview and approve expense reports related to use of corporate credit cards\nReview bank reconciliations & monthly general journal entries prepared by outside accountants\nReview and approve contracts for services provided by outside vendors\nManage overall spending based on current & projected cash flow\nAssist as needed with preparation and review of monthly vouchers for government contracts and other funders. Ensure timely voucher submission through 3rd party systems or email as required by the funder.\nPrepare grant budgets and monthly or periodic grant specific expense reports as needed.\nTest employee expense reports to ensure integrity from start to finish of purchasing process\nReview Salesforce revenue dashboards, periodically testing transactions for accuracy in coding to correct revenue accounts.\nStaff Management\nSupervise and coach staff.\nProvide guidance and support to staff in client interaction and professional development.\nFoster a positive and collaborate work environment.\nFacilitate annual performance reviews and regular coaching sessions.\nEnsure compliance with relevant laws, regulations and organizational policies.\nStay up to date on best practices and trends in accounting.\nPerforms other duties as assigned.\n\nDemonstrated Values\nIndependently follows agency policy and procedures\nFollows through with commitments including meeting established timelines\nIdentifies and resolves difficult issues\nProject a professional image to all internal and external customers ensuring proper grooming\nPromote wellness and customer care through all actions and behaviors\nWorks effectively with diverse staff, communities and population served\nMaintain a high degree of sensitivity, tact, and diplomacy during stressful situations.\nA passion for the mission of Breakthrough\nQUALIFICATIONS\nBachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, human services or related field\nMinimum of five (5) years’ experience of successively responsible nonprofit, finance or operational experience.\nDemonstrated ability to manage people, budgets, and operations and information.\nExperience supporting and working with victims and/or their family of gun violence.\nMust be able to develop and manage a team to achieve stated goals\nMust be able to develop and sustain relationships with external stakeholders\nStrong computer skills and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office\nRequired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities\nExcellent conceptual, analytical, and quantitative abilities.\nExcellent verbal and written communication skills, especially the ability to communicate well and respectfully with diverse audiences.\nMust have the ability to use initiative, discretion and independent judgment in making decisions.\nAbility and commitment to maintain high level of confidentiality\nAbility to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, professionalism, and problem-solving ability.\nAbility to display a warm, supportive attitude while promoting hospitality toward all people through all actions and behaviors.\nAbility to demonstrate initiative and follow through and be comfortable working in a changing environment.\nDemonstrates willingness to consistently improve work performance through their relationship and guidance.\nSUPERVISION\nDirection received from the Chief Administrative Officer\nSupervises\nAccounting Coordinator\nFinancial Analyst\nPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS\nWork Environment\nWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee will work in an office located in a multi-purpose facility and/or outdoors and thus will be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be high depending on the activities in the facility.\n\nPhysical Demands\nWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and/or sit; use hands and fingers to feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; regularly talk or hear. The employee must be able to bend, stoop, pull, lift as well as have overhead extension of arms. Must be able to stand for long periods of time; be able to lift, carry or move at least 50 pounds. Must adhere to proper handling and lifting techniques.
