ECMO Specialist - Mobile

Job OverviewFairview is seeking a casual ECMO Specialist to support our groundbreaking Mobile ECMO Program at the University of Minnesota Medical Center. This role involves 12-hour day, evening, or night shifts (or on-call) alongside a specialized team delivering advanced, life-saving care directly in the field.Be part of the world’s first emergency vehicle designed exclusively for cardiovascular emergencies, where patients are stabilized on-site using ECMO technology—supporting heart and lung function while critical care begins immediately.This position will provide specialized care to patients who require rapid extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) cannulation. Support the cannulating physician, manage the ECMO circuit, monitor patient status, and collaborate with other healthcare providers to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Responsibilities include sterile field management, knowledge and handling of cannulation equipment, set up and assessment of the circuit, patient resuscitation management, troubleshooting issues, and implementing interventions according to established protocols.Essential FunctionsDrive and provide daily maintenance for the mobile ECMO vehicleMoving and prepping the patient for cannulationAdminister IV medications and defibrillate at the request of the physicianPerform laboratory testing as instructed by the physicianAdjust and troubleshoot devices such as the LUCAS and Cardiohelp as neededManipulate the imaging equipment to provide the needed images for the team during cannulationManage the patient’s airway including endotracheal intubation and vent management as instructed by the physicianIdentify and hand-off equipment needed by the sterile cannulation teamDemonstrate good organizational and communication skills with tact and poise in stressful situationsDemonstrate excellent critical thinking skills, knowledge, and judgment in an uncontrolled environmentRapidly assess circumstances and communicate findings to the teamFollow instructions and prioritize actions in a rapidly changing and uncontrolled environmentAnticipate needs of the team and communicate potential problems to the teamDemonstrate a willingness to adapt to new ways of thinking about problems and treatment strategiesProvide any needed support to the team in the effort to cannulate and stabilize the patientQualificationsEducation & LicensureCompletion of an approved Paramedic or Nursing program.Current Minnesota State Certification as an EMT-Paramedic or Registered Nurse (RN). (Preference given to RN applicants).Must hold either a Minnesota RN License or EMT-Paramedic Certification.ExperienceMinimum of 3 years’ experience with an emergency advanced life support unit.Critical care transport experience preferred.Knowledge & SkillsStrong knowledge of the medical and legal aspects of emergency care within the paramedic scope of practice.Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems required.Working knowledge of medical terminology, gross anatomy, and physiology.Certifications & TrainingBLS, ACLS, NRP, and Hazardous Materials training (or equivalent) required within six (6) months of employment.Completion of Center for Resuscitation Medicine certification/training process upon hire.Benefit OverviewFairview offers a generous benefit package including but not limited to medical, dental, vision plans, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability insurance, PTO and Sick and Safe Time, tuition reimbursement, retirement, early access to earned wages, and more!
