Interns will work alongside DSS staff and BIT technical teams to document system to system interfaces, align field definitions with federal standards, and improve data governance across DSS applications. Work focuses on producing and sustaining the following deliverables: Interface Registry and Interface Control Documents (ICDs).\n\nKey Responsibilities: Requirements & discovery: partner with BIT and DSS stakeholders to gather interface requirements, inventory data sources, map current interface structures, and understand system to system interactions and data flows (including reporting to internal/external partners, and data storage, organization, and security).\n\nInterface Registry: help compile and maintain the Interface Registry across DSS applications; ensure entries are complete and current.\n\nICDs (Interface Control Documents): draft, update, and standardize ICDs for interfaces lacking documentation; capture protocols (e.g., APIs, SFTP), payload schemas, field definitions, transformations, schedules, error handling, and security controls.\n\nApplicants should demonstrate the ability to work across technical and business domains. Strong candidates will have experience or knowledge of how data can move between systems (APIs, SFTP, etc.); experience or knowledge of how data is stored (relational databases, ADABAS, etc.); be comfortable reading payloads and schemas; and be able to synthesize the business purpose of an interface (e.g., why data is sent to a specific partner) and reconcile field definitions to applicable federal standards. Proficiency with SQL, familiarity with data modeling tools, especially PowerBI, and exposure to data governance frameworks and business intelligence concepts are expected.\n\nQualifications: Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.\n\nAll students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.\n\nSuccessful applicant(s) will be required to undergo a background investigation.
