This short-term contract role is critical for achieving strong technical safeguards and delivering auditable evidence for HIPAA compliance.\r\nThe successful candidate will deploy and harden SQL Server 2022 using industry-leading encryption, access control, auditing, and masking technologies, ensuring sensitive data is protected at rest, in transit, and in use.\r\nKey Responsibilities\r\n\r\n\r\nDeploy and configure SQL Server 2022 with a full security and encryption stack, including:\r\n\r\n\r\nTransparent Data Encryption (TDE)\r\n\r\n\r\nAlways Encrypted with Azure Key Vault integration\r\n\r\n\r\nColumn-Level Encryption on all PHI-containing columns\r\n\r\n\r\nRow-Level Security (RLS)\r\n\r\n\r\nDynamic Data Masking (DDM)\r\n\r\n\r\nImplement SQL Server Audit and route audit logs to Microsoft Sentinel for centralized monitoring and alerting\r\n\r\n\r\nEnforce TLS 1.2 / 1.3 for all database connections and disable legacy protocols\r\n\r\n\r\nPerform surface area reduction and hardening (disable unnecessary features, xp_cmdshell, etc.)\r\n\r\n\r\nDesign and implement secure key management practices using Azure Key Vault\r\n\r\n\r\nDevelop and document encryption strategies, policies, and procedures for PHI protection\r\n\r\n\r\nCreate a complete HIPAA Technical Safeguard evidence package including configuration documentation, encryption inventories, key management processes, and audit procedures\r\n\r\n\r\nCollaborate with the Microsoft Security Framework Engineer and Microsoft Sentinel Engineer to ensure seamless integration with the broader security stack (Defender, Sentinel, Purview DLP, etc.)\r\n\r\n\r\nProvide knowledge transfer and training to internal database and security teams\r\n\r\n\r\nRequirements \r\n\r\n\r\n7+ years of hands-on experience as a SQL Server DBA or Database Security Engineer\r\n\r\n\r\nDeep expertise in SQL Server 2022 security features, specifically:\r\n\r\n\r\nTransparent Data Encryption (TDE)\r\n\r\n\r\nAlways Encrypted (with Azure Key Vault)\r\n\r\n\r\nColumn-Level Encryption\r\n\r\n\r\nRow-Level Security and Dynamic Data Masking\r\n\r\n\r\nSQL Server Audit and log shipping to SIEM (Sentinel)\r\n\r\n\r\nProven experience implementing encryption solutions for databases containing PHI in regulated healthcare environments\r\n\r\n\r\nStrong knowledge of HIPAA Security Rule technical safeguards and ability to produce auditable compliance evidence\r\n\r\n\r\nExperience with Azure Key Vault for cryptographic key management\r\n\r\n\r\nSolid understanding of TLS configuration, certificate management, and SQL Server surface area hardening\r\n\r\n\r\nExcellent documentation and communication skills\r\n\r\n\r\nPreferred Qualifications\r\n\r\n\r\nPrior experience working on Microsoft 365 E5 + Sentinel environments\r\n\r\n\r\nFamiliarity with Microsoft Purview sensitivity labeling and DLP integration with SQL databases\r\n\r\n\r\nCertifications such as MCSE: Data Management and Analytics, or equivalent modern SQL security-focused credentials\r\n\r\n\r\nExperience delivering HIPAA-compliant database implementations\r\n\r\n\r\nTechnology Doesn't Change the World, People Do. \r\nRobert Half is the world's first and largest specialized talent solutions firm that connects highly qualified job seekers to opportunities at great companies.
