The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.\nWorks holidays and weekends, as necessary.\nAttends training programs after hours when necessary.\nWorks overtime when necessary.\nPlans, completes and evaluates preventive maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment, either personally, or through outside vendors.\nOperates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools.\nInspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.\nRepairs brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and related systems.\nCuts, fabricates and welds metal and performs body repair, painting, touch up and related work.\nIf necessary, work on vehicles from other DPW departments.\nDevelops shop procedures for the maintenance and repair of vehicles and mechanical systems.\n· Purchases equipment, parts, and supplies used for vehicle and mechanical system maintenance.\n· Maintains records, prepares reports and other specialized maintenance records of equipment and mechanical equipment.\nEnsures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.\nPerforms other duties, such as laborer, truck driver, etc., as assigned.\nOperates equipment including but not limited to Class B CDL vehicles, sweepers and brush mowers using accepted and established practices.\nPlows and removes snow using CDL vehicles and various Town equipment; sands, salts and chemically treats roadways, parking lots and sidewalks using CDL vehicles and other Town equipment.\nIs expected to work overtime during emergencies, storms, and adverse weather conditions.\nPerforms similar or related work as directed, required or as situation dictates.\nAssists other departments when needed.\nMakes contact with other personnel, the general public, contractors, and residents; interactions require courtesy and tact.\nPerform other duties as assigned.\nMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:\nHigh school diploma or GED\nThree years of education or training in mechanics, maintenance management, or a closely related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.\nSPECIAL LICENSES:\nValid Commonwealth of Massachusetts Class B Commercial Driver’s License.\nMassachusetts Class 2A or 2B and 4G Hoisting License preferred.\nMassachusetts Class A Commercial Driver’s License preferred.\nNECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:\nKnowledge of basic public works construction and maintenance work.\nKnowledge of OSHA regulations and requirements.\nThorough knowledge of automotive mechanics; considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, pumps and valves, generators, and welding.\nKnowledge of prices and grades or quality of materials and equipment.\nWorking knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities.\nWorking knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.\nThorough knowledge of the operation of Class B CDL vehicles.\nThorough knowledge of the operation of 2A and 4G Hoisting vehicles, excavators, backhoes, front-end loaders, and specialty side boom mowers.\nKnowledge of concrete work; repairs or installation of catch basins and sewer manholes.\nAbility to perform strenuous physical duties under adverse weather conditions.\nAbility to work with chain saws and woodchippers for the purpose of tree removal.\nAbility to deal effectively and appropriately with the public and government officials.\nAbility to work independently and collaboratively as a crew member.\nPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:\nThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
