Director of MDU Sales and Engineering - Fiber Optic Telecom
Company Background: Based in Massachusetts but expanding nationally, Backbone Construction began operations in May 2023 with a focus in underground fiber optic infrastructure. From long haul directional drilling on large data center projects to pneumatic missiles on fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) projects, micro-trenching, fiber optic cable installation, and everything else in between - Backbone is involved in all aspects of fiber optic construction. Overview: The MDU Sales & Engineering Specialist is responsible for driving the design, sale, and deployment of fiber optic telecommunications solutions for multi-dwelling unit (MDU) properties such as apartment complexes, condominiums, student housing, and mixed-use developments. This role blends technical engineering expertise with consultative sales, acting as the primary technical advisor for property owners, developers, and internal sales teams.
Key Responsibilities
Sales & Business Development
Identify and pursue new MDU opportunities for fiber optic and broadband services
Develop relationships with property owners, developers, HOAs, and property managers
Support sales teams with technical presentations, proposals, and solution designs
Conduct site walks and assess existing telecom infrastructure
Prepare cost estimates, project scopes, and ROI/value propositions
Negotiate technical requirements and coordinate contract handoff
Engineering & Technical Support
Design fiber optic network architectures for MDU environments (FTTB, FTTH, riser systems)
Evaluate building layouts, pathways, risers, and demarcation points
Produce or review network diagrams, layouts, and build plans
Ensure solutions meet performance, scalability, and regulatory requirements
Act as technical liaison between sales, construction, and operations teams
Support pre-construction planning and post-installation validation
Project & Stakeholder Coordination
Collaborate with construction, permitting, and operations teams to ensure smooth deployment
Address technical issues during installation and turn-up
Ensure customer expectations align with engineering realities
Maintain accurate documentation and project records
Required Qualifications
3+ years' experience in fiber optic telecom, broadband, or MDU network environments
Strong understanding of fiber infrastructure (OSP/ISP, risers, splice enclosures, ONTs, switches)
Experience supporting or leading technical sales efforts
Ability to read building plans, telecom drawings, and network diagrams
Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to MDU sitesPreferred Qualifications
Experience with MDU bulk agreements or revenue-share models

Familiarity with local permitting and right-of-entry agreements
Knowledge of GPON, XGS-PON, Active Ethernet, and IP networking
Engineering, telecommunications, or related technical degree
BICSI, FOA, or similar telecom certifications
