Prepares specimens for fixation and embedding. Performs frozensection procedures and participates in a variety of departmental activities and services, including patient services, research, teaching and technical procedure development. Prior to obtaining Pathologist Assistant certification, must perform the following essential functions under the guidance of a certified Pathologist Assistant.\nEssential Functions:\n10%\nAccessioning of surgical specimens in the laboratory information system (LIS).\n•\nVerify patient information on specimen requisition is complete.\n•\nEnsure specimen label and requisition are congruent.\n•\nAccession, label, and process specimens.\n•\nTriage cases to appropriate area for examination.\n•\nFollow laboratory procedures for handling incorrectly submitted specimens and specimens with incomplete information.\n•\nEnsure specimens correlate to hard copy and laboratory information system\n•\nNote problems with specimen reception in the laboratory information\n35%\nPerform processing and grossing of surgical specimens, as defined by CAP and CLIA 88, list A, B and C, for anatomic pathology.\n•\nEnsure the specimen label and requisitions are congruent.\n•\nDictate patient demographics and clinical history.\n•\nDescribe gross anatomic features of the specimen on a biopsy service.\n•\nGross surgical cases as specified in List A, B and C of the CLIA regulations\n•\nPlace specimen sample(s) into appropriately labeled cassettes.\n•\nPerform frozen section microtomy and staining\n5%\nPerforms quality control and quality assurance.\n•\nConfirm surgical accession number on requisition, containers and cassettes.\n•\nCheck cassettes with daily log sheets\n•\nMaintain Q\\A monitor (specimen discrepancy log)\n10%\nMaintains gross room equipment, supply inventory, specimen storage and disposal, and general cleanliness of the laboratory.\n•\nEnsure an adequate stock of supplies, reagents and solutions for the laboratory\n•\nEnsure cleanliness of laboratory areas, instrument and equipment according to CAP checklists.\n•\nEnsure the proper disposal techniques for specimens, body fluids, other specimen waste and used reagents.\n25%\nPerforms routine and complex autopsies.\n•\nValidate consent for autopsy; verify patient name and restrictions prior to autopsy\n•\nRespect religious convictions of patient and family\n•\nPrepare body for external examination\n•\nDemonstrate proficiency of Letulle, Ghon, Rokitansky and Virchow technique\n•\nAscertain special studies as requested\n•\nCollaborate with various research efforts.\n•\nPrepare body for funeral home\n•\nNotify funeral home autopsy completion.\n•\nAssigns tasks to gross room technical staff.\n15%\nAssists with duties related to surgical pathology and autopsy services.\n•\nWrite reviews and revise and implement standard operational procedures.\n•\nEvaluate and recommend new methods, procedures and equipment and follow through the implementation.\n•\nMaintain training and competency assessment records\n•\nAssure sections are prepared for inspections by regulatory agencies.\n•\nMeet deadlines for competency and regulatory assignments.\n•\nCoordinate multiple activities and takes responsibility for finishing assigned duties, assisting others when needed.\nFollows established company and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace Code of Conduct and Compliance Plan.
