We’re looking for a Staff Backend Engineer with expertise in Java, AWS EKS, DynamoDB, Splunk, and Datadog to build scalable, resilient, and high-performance backend systems that power mission-critical digital experiences. What you’ll do:Tech Stack: Java, AWS, EKS (Kubernetes), Microservices architecture, DynamoDB, SQS, Splunk, and DataDog.Design, build, and operate Java-based microservices running on AWS and EKS.Own services end-to-end, from design through deployment, monitoring, and incident response.Participate in a shared on-call rotation across the team.Collaborate closely with engineers across multiple time zones and partner teams.Contribute to architectural decisions and help raise the technical bar on the team.On-Call Service:Daily on-call rotation shared across all team members, including weekends in the rotation.On-call applies during a defined window within core working hours. Engineers are not expected to sit at a computer for the entire shift.Weekends are not working time. The engineer is only engaged if paged for an incident.Primary expectation when paged: acknowledge in Slack, then move the ball. That can mean looping in teammates who can help, or pulling in our operations team to start a Zoom call and walk through the obvious first steps (why now, which other services are involved, etc.).Shift swaps and backup coverage are fully supported and encouraged. Coordinate with teammates and give the team lead a heads-up.If the engineer plans to be fully unreachable for a stretch during their shift, they should give the team a heads-up in advance and swap the shift.Being on the on-call schedule is not separately compensated. If active incident response is required on a weekend, the time spent can be compensated either monetarily or as time off on a mutually agreed date. This applies only to active incident work, not to simply being on the rotation. What we’re looking for:Senior or Staff-level backend experience building production services in Java.Strong hands-on experience with AWS and containerized workloads (EKS or equivalent).Experience designing and operating microservices at scale.Familiarity with DynamoDB, SQS, and observability tooling such as Splunk and DataDog.Comfort owning production systems, including being part of an on-call rotation.Strong written communication and the ability to work asynchronously across time zones.Ownership mindset: someone who moves problems forward rather than waiting to be assigned work.Open to candidates in any location if the fit is right. The existing team spans PST, Brazil, Ireland, India, and Kazakhstan, so a wide range of time zones works.Regular core working hours, with enough overlap with the broader team for collaboration.Flexibility on working hours is expected and reciprocated. If a deployment requires early or late involvement, the engineer is free to flex their hours that day.Occasional off-hours meetings tied to low-traffic deployment windows, only when the engineer's own changes are being deployed. Not a recurring meeting.","company":"Akurey","rawCompany":"akurey","city":"Northern Cambria","state":"PA","isRemote":false,"isActive":false,"createdAt":"2026-06-02T00:11:58.787Z","occupations":[{"code":"15-1252.00","title":"Software Developers","slug":"software-developers"},{"code":"15-1299.08","title":"Computer Systems Engineers/Architects","slug":"computer-systems-engineers-architects"},{"code":"15-1254.00","title":"Web Developers","slug":"web-developers"}],"industries":[{"code":"541512","title":"Computer Systems Design Services","slug":"computer-systems-design-services"},{"code":"541511","title":"Custom Computer Programming Services","slug":"custom-computer-programming-services"},{"code":"513210","title":"Software Publishers","slug":"software-publishers"}],"jobPosting":{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"JobPosting","title":"Staff Backend Engineer (Java, EKS, DynamoDB, Splunk, & DataDog)","description":"Be part of AKUREY!At AKUREY, we build high-impact digital platforms that transform how organizations deliver value to their customers.
