Paraprofessional - Special Education Autism ClassroomWork Year: 151 Days (for a full school year) Work Days: M-TH (4 day work week) Status: Nonexempt School: Carlson Elementary School Reports To: BOCES Executive Director and PrincipalPosition Summary: Responsible for providing assistance to the lead Autism classroom teacher in working with students on the Autism spectrum, clerical tasks and other functions. Develops and promotes good community relations among various community and school clientele.Essential Duties And Responsibilities Include The Following: Knowledge of behavior management and Autism is preferred. We are seeking an individual who is flexible and who has a positive attitude and passion for helping students be successful. Must be receptive to accepting feedback and adjusting as needed to support changing student needs. Support a program of studies that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students. Collaborate with the special education teacher to create appropriate learning experiences for students. Support a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students. Encourages and assists in monitoring the progress of individual students. Assist with individualized program materials. Assist in observing, recording and charting behaviors. Implement behavior management strategies initiated by the SPED Teacher. Assist with crisis problems and discipline as directed by the SPED Teacher. Program duties may include, but not limited to, the following: Transportation Duty - greet students when they arrive in the morning and assist them with getting from the vehicle to the classroom. Accompany students to classes. Supervise students in the classroom. Administer medication and other health related tasks to students as directed by the SPED teacher and as delegated by the school nurse. All Special Education Paraprofessionals must also: Perform work of acceptable quality and quantity. Demonstrate dependability and enthusiasm, in performing assigned tasks. Become familiar with and adhere to Board approved School District Policies and regulations. Serve as a positive liaison between the school and the community while maintaining confidentiality. Demonstrate effective relations with other staff members and work in cooperation with them to achieve positive results. Communicate effectively with students, staff and the public. Demonstrate high personal and professional standards and maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to the position. Participate in the writing of personal goals and objectives which demonstrate the ability to develop professionally. Attend annual trainings as instructed by the Special Education Teacher. Perform other duties as assigned.Education And Training: High School Diploma/GED required. Two years post-secondary study, Associates degree or higher preferred. Experience: Less than one (1) year job related experience. Knowledge, Experience And Other Qualifications: Requires good oral communication skills, the ability to use good judgment and maintain confidentiality. Expectations: Is flexible. Has the ability to work cooperatively with supervisors and co-workers. Has the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Has the ability to perform responsibilities without the necessity of close supervision. Has the ability to effectively communicate with the school and school District community, as well as the public at large. Has the ability to meet attendance standards and work the hours necessary to perform the essential functions of the job. Maintains a generally positive attitude. Observes all District policies and procedures. Certificates, Licenses And Registrations: None required, first aid preferred. Work Environment: The noise level is typical of a school district. Physical Requirements: Frequent sitting, bending, reaching; stooping, squatting. Occasional lifting five (5) to fifty (50) pounds. Supervisory Duties: Lunch and classroom supervisory duties as assigned with other staff.
