Description: This position is for a Surgical Technologist in a busy Labor and Delivery unit. The facility has 637 licensed beds with Level 1 trauma designation. It is a teaching hospital with a chest pain center and stroke center. The unit consists of 9 Labor Beds, 3 Operating Rooms, 4 Post Anesthesia Care Units, 11 Antepartum beds, 4 triage beds, and 27 Postpartum beds. The patient census can range from 2 to 14 laboring patients. Candidates must have 2 years of Labor and Delivery RN experience and 1 year of OB Surgical Tech experience. First-time travelers are welcome. Required patient types include laboring patients and antepartum patients. The patient ratio for RNs follows AWHONN guidelines, and for OB Technologists, it is 2-3 per shift. Additional skills required include scrubbing surgeries, assisting in c-sections, setting up for vaginal deliveries, and stocking the unit. Support within the department includes 2 OB Surgical Technologists per shift. The role includes assistance with vital signs, glucose checks, bathing, feeding, ambulating, and transporting patients as necessary. There is a unit secretary present from 7 AM to 11 PM, and a house-wide call secretary from 11 PM to 7 AM. Charge nurses may have patients as well. An IV team is not present, but there is a PICC team available. Respiratory therapy, hospitalists, and intensivists are available 24/7. OB physicians are also on-site 24/7. Technology used includes an electronic medical record system and various monitoring systems. Units specific equipment includes vital sign monitors, glucose stat strips, and portable oxygen systems. The department expects staff to work one shift during each major holiday. Requests for time off must be approved by management. The unit culture is busy but emphasizes teamwork.
