Instructional Student Assistant Employment Opportunity Job Title: Peer Mentor – Instructional Student Assistant Department: College of Science Location: Turlock Campus, DBH 288, Stanislaus - Turlock, CA Work Type: Part‑time, on‑site (7–10 hours per week during the semester and finals week) Openings: 1 Expected Start Date: August17,2026 Expected End Date: May31,2027 Responsibilities Provide academic assistance through Drop‑In Peer Tutoring in identified courses in DBH288 or other designated locations. Assist with recruiting activities for S‑STEM and other scholarship programs, including giving presentations in computer science classes. Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences. Use active listening and questioning strategies to diagnose student needs, prior knowledge, skills, and monitor progress. Guide student participation, evaluate performance, and provide appropriate feedback and encouragement. Offer study‑skill strategies (e.g., time management, note taking, textbook reading, test taking) to enhance learning. Maintain neat, up‑to‑date, accurate and complete records and help maintain an orderly work environment. Utilize feedback and reflection to improve tutoring practice. Help students become more confident, more successful, self‑directed learners; be direct and kind. Make appropriate referrals to campus and community resources. Take student attendance records during sessions and conduct walk‑in sessions. Participate in regular debriefing sessions with supervisors. Required Qualifications Undergraduate students must be registered in a minimum of six (6) Fall/Spring units. Post‑baccalaureate students in a graduate program must be registered in a minimum of four (4) Fall/Spring units. Preferred Qualifications Declared major in Biology (or Undeclared with a Biology interest if a Transfer), Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, or Physical Science.
