Volunteers stay onsite for the full duration of each respite break, which runs from Friday to Monday on various dates throughout the year. Each break typically includes approximately four volunteers, alongside SBHI staff and eight participants. Where possible, new volunteers are paired with experienced volunteers to provide support and guidance.Key ResponsibilitiesEncourage and support participants to engage fully in activities throughout the respite breakPromote and facilitate participants’ independence while providing assistance where requiredSupport participants with personal care needs (including showering, toileting, dressing, etc.) where necessary – levels of support vary depending on individual participant needsWork closely with nursing staff, who provide guidance and support in relation to participant care requirementsEnsure the safety, wellbeing, and comfort of all participants at all timesReport to the Respite Coordinator and communicate any concerns or updates appropriatelyAttend team meetings and briefings as requiredAssist with kitchen and general housekeeping duties where neededContribute positively to creating a welcoming, respectful, and enjoyable environment for participantsTraining and SupportAll new volunteers and staff are required to attend training prior to participating in respite breaks.
