Responsible for planning, executing, and instruction of specialized classes and programs for varying ages, at all levels from basic to advanced; and to perform related work as required.\n\nClass Characteristics\nPositions in this class require a moderate amount of previous instruction experience in the specialized class or program provided. Work is varied, creative, and independent. Work is reviewed periodically, and feedback from program participants is used in evaluation. Incumbents are expected to utilize their discretion for typical variations in work and consult their immediate supervisor for further direction in difficult situations.\n\nResponsibilities\n\nPrepare program and class lessons; instruct and lead groups of participants in a specific subject or lesson.\n\nEstablish and enforce class/program rules and policies for participants.\n\nUtilize skills and knowledge to effectively convey class content to participants.\n\nPrepare site for activity and ensure proper clean‑up at the end of each class/program; set up and break down the room, field, or facility where instruction is held.\n\nCollect fees; ensure proper record‑keeping of participants including attendance and payment per session; order supplies and materials.\n\nEngage with participants before and after class; follow all safety procedures; provide light custodial duties; handle minor disagreements between participants.\n\nUse specialized art, music, exercise, or other equipment related to the topic of instruction.\n\nAccompany participants on field trips; effectively respond to emergencies related to participants or the facility; assist with special events; and other duties as assigned.\n\nLicense and Certification\n\nPossession of a valid First Aid Certificate, or the ability to obtain the certificate within two (2) months of hire.\n\nEducation and Experience\n\nCompletion of formal or informal education sufficient to assure ability to read and write at the required level.\n\nOne (1) year of experience in preparing program or class lessons and instructing groups of participants.\n\nDesirable: Experience working with senior citizens or youth.\n\nMay work independently on day and evening shifts; may be required to work at several Community Services locations.\n\nQualifications\nKnowledge and abilities as follows:\n\nThorough knowledge of specialized subject matter of class/program.\n\nThorough knowledge and understanding of instructional procedures and practices.\n\nBasic math and record‑keeping procedures.\n\nOffice procedures, methods and equipment including computers, data entry, Microsoft Office, Internet, and custom program‑based software.\n\nEffective communication that facilitates learning; customer service principles and practices.\n\nProper methods, materials, tools, chemicals, and equipment used in the class/program.\n\nAppropriate safety precautions and procedures.\n\nAbility to provide assistance and instruction to participants and volunteers.\n\nRead, understand and apply simple materials.\n\nSupervise and evaluate the work of others.\n\nGenerate interest of participants in class/program including creating new programs.\n\nAdapt and modify lessons as necessary.\n\nCommunicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.\n\nUnderstand and carry out oral and written instructions.\n\nEstablish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course.\n\nWork independently.\n\nLift and move tables, chairs, equipment, and supplies.\n\nPerform light custodial duties.\n\nHours\nThe incumbent will work approximately 2 to 10 hours a week.\n\nPhysical Demands and Working Conditions\nLight work – occasional lifting, carrying and/or pushing up to 25 pounds. Ability to lead and participate in activities; sit and/or stand for long periods; bend, stoop, reach, walk; climb ladder to reach inventory supplies. Assist elderly and disabled clients as necessary.
