Cryogenics Engineering Group Leader

Position Description The C-AD Cryogenics Group has an opening for a seasoned electrical or mechanical engineering manager with experience in the engineering and operations of large industrial process equipment and complex piping systems, or complex PLC-based data acquisition and SCADA systems, for chemical plants or cryogenic process plants. Work scope will include managing the day-to-day work of the Cryo Group, supervising engineers and technicians, and managing upgrades and maintenance of the current central liquid helium processing plant and other cryogenic equipment, and the design and planning for future EIC cryogenic systems and equipment. This position has a high level of visibility at BNL and the EIC project, and interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Manage, supervise, and guide the C-AD Cryogenics Group mechanical and electrical engineering and technician staff. Maintain and develop the staff and infrastructure with high standards for quality of work and ensure that qualified staff are assigned to carry out the technical tasks. Hire and train new staff to meet anticipated workload requirements. Evaluate and manage the performance of staff under your direct supervision. Working with the C-AD Cryogenic Group engineering supervisors and system and project leads in the engineering staff, manage and oversee individual engineering projects and the development of project plans including defining and documenting scope, labor and material resources, schedules, procurement plans, and subsequent tracking and reporting on these projects through to completion. Oversee the budgets of upgrade projects and manage the operations budget for the C-AD Cryogenics Group. Lead, coordinate, and supervise the operations of existing and future EIC cryogenic systems and the cryogenic test facilities supporting EIC. Oversee the development of work planning procedures, hazard analyses, safety reviews, development of operating procedures manuals, and oversee the conduct of operations. Ensure that the group continues to follow BNL safety standards and national safety and equipment codes. Interact with and report to the C-AD Chairperson and the C-AD Accelerator Division Head for assignments, guidance, and support. Collaborate with C-AD and EIC engineering and scientific group leaders and staff to provide Cryogenic systems requirements, interfaces, guidance, and support for the design of SRF cavities, superconducting magnet cryomodules, and other cryogenically cooled systems. Oversee the development of specifications, drawings, and other procurement documentation, the review of vendor proposals and bids, the interface and follow up with vendors/fabricators during manufacturing, travel for design meetings and the testing and commissioning of new systems. Present engineering and design presentations for BNL and Department of Energy reviews as well as advise and oversee the development and execution of reviews by the Cryogenic Group's engineering staff. Oversight of coordination of the technical staff for fabrication, assembly, testing and installation of equipment in the C-AD shops and facilities. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or other related field. At least 10 years' progressively responsible experience in the engineering, procurement, installation, and/or operations of mechanical equipment and components, complex piping systems, or complex controls and instrumentation and SCADA systems for chemical plants or cryogenic process plants (for example, LNG, Air Separation, or any other cryogenic processing plant). Ability to positively interact and support contractors, vendors, and procurement professionals. Excellent written and oral skills and proficiency with MS Office Suite. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: MS degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or other related field. 15 years' relevant engineering experience. 5 years in a senior engineering role with management and supervisory experience to include a track record of hiring, mentoring and coaching, engineers and technicians. Familiarity with plant/system process simulation and use of cryogenic thermodynamic and transport properties database such as HePak, Gaspak, Refprop, Aspen HYSYS or other plant process simulation software. Experience developing, maintaining, and operating PLC-based data acquisition, data transmission, SCADA and HMI software. Project development and management skills, a PMP certification, and proficiency with project management software like MS Project. Experience interfacing with unions and managing union staff. Experience with pipe sizing, control valve sizing, and relief device sizing. Familiarity with practical finite element analysis using ANSYS Workbench or Comsol, and pipe stress analysis programs such as CAESAR-II, CAEPIPE, AUTOPIPE, WINPIPE, ROHR2. Experience creating and checking detailed mechanical drawings and 3D models of pipe systems and components and managing the work of mechanical designers. Experience with creating and reviewing detailed piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID) and process flow diagrams (PFDs) for general plant systems. Familiarity with ASME BPVC VIII and ASME B31.3 or B31.1 Piping Code. Experience with the procurement and installation of process plant equipment (e.g. compressors, pumps, pressure vessels, heat exchangers) and piping components (e.g. fittings, flanges, valves, bellows, flexlines). Professional Engineering license. Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements: May be required to climb ladders and/or work in Confined Spaces. May be required to work in Oxygen Deficiency Hazard area, High Noise environment and Static Magnetic fields area. Will be required to become a qualified Radiation Worker and may be required to work in radiation areas. May be required to occasionally work off-hours, nights or weekends to support mission critical projects. Other Information: May be required to travel to attend vendor meetings, project reviews, and conferences, and training. A hybrid work arrangement is available for working from home one out of five days a week. This should be discussed with the C-AD Accelerator Division Head.
