Medical Billing Assistant
Diabetes & Endocrinology Center of Ohio, in Columbus (Dublin), Ohio, a privately owned and operated endocrinology practice, is seeking a Medical Billing Assistant to become an integral part of our billing team. The Billing Assistant will directly report to the Billing Manager and Practice Manager. The ideal candidate is someone who takes pride in their everyday tasks, is mature and highly responsible, and can function effectively as part of a team as well as being able to work independently. The candidate must be very detail-oriented and organized.
The Medical Billing Assistant will be responsible for accurately submitting claims, processing payments, following up with payers, and appealing denials. The ability to effectively communicate with patients, providers, and insurance companies is a critical skill set.
Primary duties include but are not limited to: detailed review of guarantor and insurance information, reconciling accounts, setting up payment plans, daily auditing of practice lab billing, and working directly with Billing Manager on projects related to accounts management. Secondary duties include but are not limited to: daily communications with patients, minor scheduling tasks, working through AR reporting, supporting the collections process, generating patient statements, posting payments, auditing claims, and generating reports.
The ideal candidate should have at least 1 year of billing/claims experience and have a strong working knowledge of accounting and medical billing principles. Experience with Athena electronic medical record is strongly preferred, but not required.
Job Responsibilities
Perform daily billing functions with use of EMR system
Timely and accurately submit claims
Assist with overseeing patient accounts on a timely basis
Chart audits: follow up with providers to ensure accurate diagnosis coding, charges, and modifiers are used.
Insurance verification with detailed review of how they are entered into the system and ensuring all information is accurate and current
Generating patient statements and daily reconciliation of patient accounts
Daily review of account balances: communicating with patients about balances, setting up payment plans, sending settlement letters, sending collections letters, making direct calls to patients regarding their account.
Answering billing related questions from patients, providers, and insurance companies
Minor scheduling tasks, schedule review
Assist the Billing Manager with a variety of other daily tasks
Position Requirements
Associate’s or bachelor’s degree required
Certification in Medical coding/billing required
Strong computer experience is essential, including but not limited to practice management software, electronic medical records, word processing, and spreadsheet applications.
Knowledge of current CPT and ICD-10 coding preferred, familiarity with medical terminology.
Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurances
Knowledge of revenue cycle billing
Requires a high level of interpersonal, problem solving and analytic skills.
Strong organization, written and verbal communication skills.
Compliance with policies and procedures and adherence to company standards
Be able to function both independently and on a team in a fast-paced environment.
Work courteously and respectfully with fellow employees, providers, and patients.
Ability to multi-task and be flexible in the ever-changing healthcare landscape
Working knowledge of electronic medical records strongly preferred
