VMware Tools for Linux is a collection of user‑space services provided via open‑vm‑tools, packaged in all major Linux distributions. VMware Tools provides a two‑way interface and glue between the virtualization host and the virtual machine’s guest operating system so both sides can cooperate. It enables soft power operations, guest automation APIs, guest file system quiescing, gathering guest information, and more. Building VMware Tools functionality requires working on guest components as well as vSphere services. We are looking for highly motivated and talented software engineers to tackle challenging, industry‑proven problems in VCF. The ideal candidate must have a passion for user experience, a strong systems‑design background, enterprise software development experience, and a focus on product quality and security.\n\nResponsibilities\nR&D engineers drive new feature development for various guest OSes, fix issues uncovered in the existing product, and improve our development processes to make our daily lives easier. This role requires close collaboration with senior technical leaders for designing and implementing new ideas, peers for design and code reviews, the QE and support organizations to understand product issues, and technical writers to document new product behaviors.\n\nRequired Skills and Background\n\nBachelor’s plus 8+ years, preferably Master’s plus 6+ years in Computer Science experience in building, shipping and supporting enterprise software through multiple releases\n\nExperience designing and leading complex system software projects using C/C++ on Windows and Linux platforms\n\nHands‑on experience developing user‑space applications/services for Windows and Linux in C/C++\n\nExpertise on Windows and Linux operating system internals\n\nHighly skilled in designing and implementing data structures, algorithms, system libraries, services, and APIs\n\nProficient in multi‑threaded programming, client‑server programming, and efficient code writing\n\nHands‑on experience using debugging tools such as WinDbg, PerfMon, Process Monitor, Process Explorer, UMDH, GDB, gperf, gcore, Valgrind, strace, etc. to debug and solve technical and performance issues in system software\n\nAbility to multitask and prioritize competing deadlines\n\nProven track record of delivering excellent quality deliverables with global cross‑functional teams and tight deadlines\n\nExcellent technical communication skills to communicate in detail as well as at a high level\n\nOther Desired Skills\n\nExposure to device drivers and kernel space code\n\nExperience with scripting languages like Python\n\nExperience in virtualization software technology\n\nExperience in token‑based authentication systems using tokens such as SAML bearer token, JWT token\n\nCompensation and Benefits\nThe annual base salary range for this position is $120,000 - $192,000. This position is also eligible for a discretionary annual bonus in accordance with relevant plan documents, and equity in accordance with equity plan documents and equity award agreements.
