Consumers, dealers, and commercial partners trade in, sell, and auction used EVs through a platform built exclusively for electric, with nothing adapted from legacy automotive.\n\nConsumers can get an instant cash offer in minutes, backed by data-driven pricing, battery state-of-health analysis, with pickup, payment, and title transfer handled end-to-end. Franchise and independent dealers across the United States bid in real time on inventory sourced directly from these consumers, dealers, and commercial partners. The result is a single platform that gives sellers a fast, fair exit and gives dealers a dedicated channel for sourcing used EV inventory.\n\nFounded in 2023 and led by former Tesla executives, Plug has facilitated $100M in EV sales since launch and is backed by a $20M Series A from Lightspeed Venture Partners. We're building the most AI-native startup team in Los Angeles, full of operators, engineers, and ML researchers laying the transaction rails for the used EV market's exponential growth.\n\nWhy Plug\n\nYou'll own a piece of the biggest infrastructure opportunity in automotive.\n\nYou'll work on a platform built exclusively for EVs, with nothing adapted from legacy automotive.\n\nYou'll be part of an AI-native company. We're rethinking how work gets done at a fundamental level.\n\nYou'll work directly with operators who have scaled multi-billion dollar businesses in automotive, EV, and marketplaces.\n\nYou'll have real ownership, high autonomy, and a direct line to company outcomes.\n\nThe Opportunity\n\nEvery transaction on Plug moves real money - consumer payouts, dealer settlements, lien payoffs, auction proceeds - and today those flows run on infrastructure that was built to get us to $100M in volume, not to $1B. We need a technical architect to design the money systems that get us there: a ledger and payments architecture that's correct, auditable, and fast, built to survive contact with banking partners, regulators, and scale.\n\nWe believe building consumer-facing product architecture and building money-facing architecture are fundamentally different disciplines, and rarely the same person's strength. This role exists because we need someone whose primary craft is the latter: designing systems that hold up under regulatory scrutiny, banking-partner constraints, and financial audit - not just under user load.\n\nWhat You'll Do\n\nOwn the architecture for Plug's money-facing systems: ledger, payment disbursement, settlement, reconciliation, and lien/title payoff processing.\n\nDesign a ledger that is deterministic, auditable, and gives a single, queryable source of truth for every dollar that moves through the platform.\n\nArchitect systems that integrate directly with banking partners, payment processors, and lien/title servicers - working within the regulatory and compliance constraints those partnerships require, and doing so elegantly rather than with brittle workarounds.\n\nMake and document the core technical tradeoffs for financial systems: consistency vs. availability, idempotency, fault tolerance, and failure recovery for transaction-critical infrastructure.\n\nPartner with Product, Risk, Finance, and Compliance to translate business and regulatory requirements into system design.\n\nSet technical standards and review architecture for any system that touches money, acting as the final technical guardrail before it ships.\n\nMentor and raise the technical bar for engineers working in and around the money systems domain, without owning formal people management.\n\nEvaluate and help decide when to build vs. integrate with external payments/banking infrastructure providers.\n\nWhat You'll Bring\n\n10+ years in software engineering, with 5+ years working on B2B and B2C payments solutions.\n\nDirect experience designing and building payments, ledger, lending, or money movement infrastructure - not just consumer-facing payment systems.\n\nA genuine taste for elegance: the ability to design within real regulatory and stakeholder constraints in a way that stays efficient and clean, rather than accumulating one-off exceptions and technical debt to satisfy each new requirement.\n\nProven experience designing systems within regulatory and banking-partner constraints - you understand what it takes to build infrastructure that a bank, processor, or regulator will actually sign off on.\n\nDeep expertise in distributed systems: transaction integrity, financial data consistency, idempotency, auditability, and fault tolerance at scale.\n\nA track record of owning architecture decisions end-to-end, from design through implementation and long-term maintainability.\n\nComfort operating with high agency in an ambiguous, fast-moving startup environment - you'll be the first and primary technical owner of this domain.\n\nStrong cross-functional collaboration skills - you can translate complex technical tradeoffs for Product, Risk, Finance, and Compliance stakeholders.\n\nInternational or cross-border money movement experience is a plus, but not required.\n\nExperience with title, lien, lending, or marketplace escrow-like flows is a plus.\n\nYou work agent-first. You are comfortable orchestrating multiple coding agents, defining clear acceptance criteria, and reviewing AI-generated output to a high bar - and you have a point of view on where that is and is not appropriate in code that moves money.\n\nCompensation and Benefits\n\nAnnual salary: $222,256 -$259,324\n\nSalary ranges reflect independent, third-party benchmarking against national compensation data. Where an individual's actual offer falls within that range depends on a combination of factors, including relevant experience, specialized skills, training and qualifications, current business needs, and prevailing market conditions. Ranges are reviewed periodically and may be adjusted to reflect changing market conditions.\n\nBenefits & Perks:\n\nHealth, Vision, and Dental insurance\n\n401(k) plan\n\n30 days work from anywhere per calendar year\n\nDaily lunch stipend\n\nEquity (based on role and performance)\n\nUnlimited PTO\n\nFully stocked kitchen\n\nDog-friendly office\n\nOngoing opportunities for growth and development\n\nThis full-time position is an in-person role ideally based in Sawtelle (between Santa Monica and West Los Angeles). We are headquartered in Los Angeles and is our preferred location, with relocation assistance provided for successful candidates who need to relocate. Candidates already based in the San Francisco area will also be considered; relocation is not required for these candidates. Sponsorship is not available at this time.\n\nAcknowledgments\n\nPlug is an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. We believe diverse teams build better products.","company":"Plug Technologies","rawCompany":"plug technologies","city":"Millbrae","state":"CA","isRemote":false,"isActive":false,"createdAt":"2026-09-19T10:38:17.155Z","occupations":[{"code":"15-1252.00","title":"Software Developers","slug":"software-developers"},{"code":"15-1299.08","title":"Computer Systems Engineers/Architects","slug":"computer-systems-engineers-architects"},{"code":"17-2199.00","title":"Engineers, All Other","slug":"engineers-all-other"}],"industries":[{"code":"513210","title":"Software Publishers","slug":"software-publishers"},{"code":"541511","title":"Custom Computer Programming Services","slug":"custom-computer-programming-services"},{"code":"522320","title":"Financial Transactions Processing, Reserve, and Clearinghouse Activities","slug":"financial-transactions-processing-reserve-and-clearinghouse-activities"}],"jobPosting":{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"JobPosting","title":"Principal Software Engineer, Fintech","description":"Job Title: Principal Software Engineer, Fintech\nTeam: Engineering\nLocation: Onsite - Sawtelle (Between Santa Monica & West LA) or San Francisco, CA\nEmployment Type: Full-time\nReports To: Head of Engineering / CTO\n\nAbout Plug\n\nPlug is an automotive fintech startup building the marketplace for electric vehicles.
