Patient Care Assistant Performs all patient care activities under the direction of a Registered Nurse and functions in the role of assistant to the nursing staff. This includes greeting patients, taking and recording vital signs, performing EKGs, assisting with procedures, providing hygiene and nutrition, feeding patients as needed, making rounds on a group of assigned patients, stocking supplies, transfer of patients to Med/Surg units, and assisting with the cleaning of patient care equipment. Essential Responsibilities / Duties Provides and maintains a safe and comfortable environment for the patient including assisting patients with getting in and out of bed, orienting patients to call light and side rails, maintaining accessibility and answering call light in a timely fashion, staying with restless patients, making and instructing in the use of cough pillows, and assisting in the collection of medical data, vital signs, and cardiac monitoring. Assists the Registered Nurse with specific components of admission, transfer, and discharge of patients such as preparation of the unit, transferring patients to beds, assembling patients' belongings, and accompanying patients as directed. Assists the Registered Nurse with activities of daily living such as partial bed baths, assistance with shower and sit baths as appropriate for patient, filling water pitchers, and serving nourishments and recording intake and output. Assists with collection of specimens including phlebotomy. Documents vital signs, I&O, IV insertions on appropriate forms and EMR. Disposes of trash and linen on an ongoing basis. Maintains knowledge of and complies with infectious diseases policy and procedures such as appropriately caring for patients on precautions, using protective measures as deemed appropriate, and separating and disposing of infectious materials appropriately. Complies with Patient Safety goals as set forth by the medical center. Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment. Communicates effectively with internal and external customers with respect of differences in cultures, values, beliefs, and ages utilizing interpreters when needed. Responds to questions appropriately referring items in question to authorized staff. Maintains positive communications with other departments. Performs other duties as assigned. Job Requirements Education: High School Diploma EMT-P Paramedic Certificates Licenses Registrations Required: CPR ACLS OEMS Certification of Paramedic Experience: 1-2 years of experience or GSMC clinical experience 1 year of clerical experience preferably in the medical field. Computer skills required. Knowledge and Skills: Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Able to complete mathematical computations required to perform treatment protocols. Able to lift, transfer, and move patients. Knowledge of medical terminology preferred. IV/Phlebotomy Skills Dysrhythmia recognition. Knowledge of Meditech preferred.
