This role reports to the Sr Director of Engineering and is focused on driving architectural clarity and building systems that balance speed, reliability, and compliance.\nHow you’ll make an impact\nLead, coach, and develop a high-performing engineering team focused on providing high quality solutions and incrementally increase .\nFoster a collaborative and inclusive team culture that promotes innovation, continuous learning, and excellence.\nOversee the design, development, and implementation of cross functional projects which drive business outcomes.\nEnsure the reliability, performance, and scalability of customer facing products, leveraging best practices in software engineering.\nCollaborate with architecture and infrastructure teams to ensure alignment with broader engineering goals.\nPartner with product manager, product designer, engineering leaders across Upstart, legal, operations, analytics, and compliance teams to gather requirements and ensure solutions meet business needs and regulatory standards.\nCommunicate effectively with stakeholders to keep them informed of project status, risks, and opportunities.\nManage project timelines and resources to deliver high-quality product solutions on time.\nImplement frameworks to ensure efficient project execution and continuous delivery.\nMinimum Qualifications\nBachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or its equivalent) and +10 years of experience, including 5 years of direct people management experience.\nProven success leading and scaling high-performing engineering teams (e.g., growing headcount, improving delivery metrics, or managing multiple squads)\nExperienced in workflow automation, data integrations, and event-driven architectures that power operational efficiency.\nDemonstrated ability to partner closely with Product, and ML teams to deploy models at scale and build scalable production ready systems\nExceptional communication skills with the ability to influence technical and non-technical audiences\nStrong analytical, organizational, and strategic thinking skills with a bias for action\nPreferred Qualifications\nExperience building products in fintech, credit servicing, or customer support environments\nBackground in lending, recoveries, or collections systems with complex policy and compliance requirements.\nExperience developing senior engineers, tech leads, or emerging engineering leaders\nDemonstrated ability to balance speed, quality, reliability, and compliance in high-stakes technical environments\nExperience managing critical production issues in regulated environments where customer impact and compliance intersect.\nPosition location This role is available in the following locations: Remote\nTime zone requirements The team operates on the East/West coast time zones.\nTravel requirements As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely. The majority of our employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S but are encouraged to to still spend high quality time in-person collaborating via regular onsites. The in-person sessions’ cadence varies depending on the team and role; most teams meet once or twice per quarter for 2-4 consecutive days at a time.`\n\nAt Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location.
