The Senior Software Engineer, Middleware is a key technical contributor on the team that powers the integration layer connecting Subway’s front-end applications (iOS, Android, Web, Kiosk) with our internal and external partner systems. \\n \\nYou’ll design, build, and maintain high-performance APIs and services on AWS, collaborating closely with product, architecture, and partner engineering teams. You’ll also own integrations with major third-party delivery and marketplace platforms — including DoorDash, Uber Eats, and similar partners — ensuring seamless order flow, menu synchronization, and operational reliability across channels. \\n \\nThis is a hands-on engineering role with real ownership. AI-assisted development is a core part of how our team works — you’ll be expected to leverage tools like GitHub Copilot and Claude daily to accelerate delivery, improve code quality, and solve complex problems faster. \\n \\nResponsibilities:\\n\\nDesign, develop, and document new and enhanced APIs as part of the Subway middleware platform, supporting both internal system integration and external partner connectivity. \\nLeverage AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude, and similar) as a core part of daily engineering work — from code generation and refactoring to test coverage and documentation. Champion AI tooling adoption across the team. \\nBuild and maintain integrations with third-party delivery and marketplace partners (e.g., DoorDash, Uber Eats, and similar platforms), ensuring reliable order flow, menu synchronization, and real-time operational data exchange. \\nCollaborate with business stakeholders and product teams to understand functional and technical requirements; translate those into scalable, maintainable architecture and implementation plans. \\nConduct constructive code reviews and provide technical design guidance to peers and junior engineers, raising the overall quality and consistency of team output. \\nEnforce data governance, security policies, and compliance standards throughout the software development lifecycle. \\n\\nTechnology Stack \\nOur middleware platform is built on the following core technologies. Strong familiarity with this stack is expected: \\nAWS Lambda \\nAPI Gateway \\nDynamoDB \\nSQS / SNS \\nNode.js / TypeScript \\nTerraform / IaC \\nGitHub / ADO \\nDynatrace / APM \\nOpenAPI / Swagger \\nAI Code Assistants \\n \\nRequired Qualifications\\nEducation \\n\\nBachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience) \\n\\nExperience \\n\\n5+ years of hands-on production software development experience \\n\\n\\nDemonstrated experience building and operating RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs at scale \\n\\n\\nStrong proficiency in one or more of: JavaScript/TypeScript (Node.js), Java, or C# \\n\\n\\nExperience with serverless architectures on AWS (Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, SQS/SNS) \\n\\n\\nSolid understanding of integration patterns: event-driven architecture, webhooks, async messaging, and pub/sub \\n\\n\\nExperience integrating with third-party platforms and vendor APIs (e.g., delivery aggregators, POS systems, loyalty platforms, or similar ecosystem partners) \\n\\n\\nProficiency with AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude, or equivalent) — must be comfortable using AI daily to write, review, refactor, and document code \\n\\n\\nExperience with CI/CD pipelines and source control workflows (Git, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps) \\n\\n\\nFamiliarity with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or CloudFormation) \\n\\nSkills & Competencies \\n\\nStrong debugging, root-cause analysis, and production incident management skills \\n\\n\\nExcellent verbal and written communication, including technical documentation and stakeholder-facing artifacts \\n\\n\\nAbility to translate ambiguous business requirements into clear technical specifications \\n\\n\\nCollaborative mindset with a willingness to give and receive candid code review feedback \\n\\n \\nPreferred Qualifications \\n\\nDirect experience integrating with DoorDash Drive, Uber Eats, or other major delivery/marketplace platform APIs \\n\\n\\nExperience with multi-region AWS deployments and global traffic management (Akamai, CloudFront) \\n\\n\\nFamiliarity with identity and authentication patterns: OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, AWS Cognito \\n\\n\\nHands-on experience with observability platforms (Dynatrace, Datadog, CloudWatch) \\n\\n\\nExperience prompting, fine-tuning, or orchestrating LLMs/AI agents as part of a software delivery workflow \\n\\n\\nExperience in QSR, retail, or e-commerce domains \\n\\n\\nAWS Certified Developer – Associate or higher \\n\\n\\nExposure to React Native or cross-platform mobile app integration patterns \\n\\n \\nWhat You’ll Be Part Of \\nSubway’s Digital & Consumer Technology team is in the middle of a major platform transformation — migrating legacy systems to modern cloud-native architecture, building new consumer experiences across mobile, web, and kiosk, and expanding our global digital footprint.
