You will support a variety of research and development activities for the eVinci Microreactor heat pipe development program and other research projects at our 51 Bridge Street facility in Pittsburgh, PA. This is a temporary position aligned with the Westinghouse Intern program for onboarding, duration, and offboarding.Key ResponsibilitiesSupport leading, planning, sponsoring, executing test and development programs throughout all phases of the design processHands-on fabrication and assembly of prototype fixtures and equipmentSupport heat pipe research and developing novel manufacturing processes and equipmentCollaborate with design, analysis, testing, and manufacturing teams to identify design features which require substantiation through prototyping.Develop and implement design requirements, test plans, specifications, and procedures following quality assurance program requirementsPerform and execute prototyping and validation experiments in compliance with quality assurance and safety requirementsTechnical writing, including development of technical reportsReduce and analyze large datasets using Matlab, DIAdem, or MathcadDesign test articles and first of a kind prototypes using standard engineering practices and finite element analysisResearch, design, and selection of equipment and instrumentation for test facility applicationsPrepare detailed sketches, 3D models, and drawings using Auto Cad, Inventor, and SolidworksDevelop control and data acquisition systems for instruments and equipment using Labview or other PLC control systemsHands-on installation and troubleshooting of instrumentation and equipment controlsIntegrate testing efforts with modeling and analysisQualificationsA bachelor's degree in mechanical, electro-mechanical, or aerospace engineeringPursuing a Ph.D in Mechanical, Electro-Mechanical, or Aerospace EngineeringExtensive post-baccalaureate research focused on thermodynamics, fluid systems, and heat transfer3-5 years professional experience working in a lab/testing environment (academic or industry lab)Prior experience of laboratory chemical hygiene practicesExperience designing and fabricating experimental test setups and DAQ systemsExperience of instrumentation error propagation analysesExperience in 3D modeling and drafting software (Inventor or Solidworks)Experience in thermal-structural design analysis considering material systems of varying thermal expansionExperience with finite element analysis using ANSYS workbenchPressure, temperature, and fluid flow instrumentation experienceWorking knowledge of NI Labview or comparable DAQ systemsExperience with ultra/high vacuum applications involving design and selection of pumping systems and materials at room and high temperature conditionsWe are committed to transparency and equity in all of our people practices.
