But most companies don't have the resources to properly invest in these tools, leading to a lot of old, clunky internal software, or worse, teams still stuck in manual and spreadsheet workflows.\nAI has changed who gets to build software. The definition of \"developer\" now includes analysts, operators, and domain experts creating solutions directly—and the tools they reach for are multiplying by the week. That's both an opportunity and a challenge: as more people build with more AI tools, the risk of shipping ungoverned software into production grows just as fast.\nAt Retool, we're building the platform that makes all of it safe to ship. Build with any AI tool you want, then deploy into one place that connects to your real business data, enforces enterprise policies automatically, and lets teams create once and reuse everywhere with shared, trusted components. The cost of building software has collapsed. The cost of governing it hasn't—and that's the problem we solve.\nDevelopers and domain experts have already automated over 100 million hours of work on our platform, freeing them to focus on creative problem-solving and strategic work that drives real business value. The people closest to the problem can now build the software to solve it, safely, and within enterprise guardrails.\nLet's build the future together.\n\nWHY WE’RE LOOKING FOR YOU\nRetool is growing quickly, and the systems that power our internal operations need to scale with speed, reliability, and efficiency. We’re looking for an IT² Engineer to design and build the systems that will power the next phase of that growth.\nThis is not a traditional IT role. You won’t be measured on tickets closed. You will be measured on systems improved, workflows automated, and manual work eliminated.\nThis role is focused on leverage. You will build internal tools and automation that reduce operational overhead, consolidate (and eliminate!) third-party tooling, and enable teams across Retool to move faster with fewer constraints. You will also play a critical role in making Retool its own best customer by building with our platform and shaping how it evolves through real-world usage.\nYou will also help level up the team by mentoring other team members and contributing to a culture of strong engineering practices within IT².\nWHO YOU’LL WORK WITH\nYou’ll partner closely with teams across Security, Infrastructure, Finance, Workplace, and People Ops to design and build scalable systems that power internal operations.\nThis role sits at the intersection of systems, security, and internal product development. You’ll work cross-functionally to translate operational pain points into automated workflows and internal tools, while helping define how Retool itself is used inside the company.\nIN THIS ROLE, YOU’LL\nDesign and build internal tools using Retool to power IT, Security, and operational workflows across the company\nAutomate core business processes, including onboarding, offboarding, access reviews, procurement, and internal service workflows\nEliminate manual work and reduce operational overhead by replacing repetitive processes with scalable systems\nIdentify opportunities to consolidate or replace third-party SaaS tools with internal solutions, reducing cost and complexity\nOwn identity lifecycle systems, including provisioning, RBAC, and integrations across tools like Okta, Rippling, and other critical systems\nImprove security and compliance posture through automated access controls, auditing, and system design\nBuild and maintain integrations across internal and external systems using APIs and event-driven workflows\nPartner with IT, Security, Infrastructure, and business teams to turn fragmented processes into scalable, well-designed systems\nAct as an internal product builder and power user of Retool, helping shape how we use and improve our own platform\nDefine and implement scalable patterns and best practices for internal tooling across the company\nMentor junior team members and help raise the technical bar for automation and internal tooling across the team\nTHE SKILLSET YOU’LL BRING\n5+ years of experience in IT Engineering, Systems Engineering, Internal Tools, or similar roles in a fast-growing technology company\nProven track record of building internal tools and automation systems that eliminate manual operational work and scale business processes\nStrong experience designing and implementing automation using programming languages such as Python or JavaScript, including API integrations and workflow orchestration\nDeep systems thinking with an automation-first mindset. You instinctively replace manual processes with scalable solutions\nHands-on experience with identity and access management systems including Okta, SSO, SCIM, and RBAC, and designing reliable lifecycle workflows\nExperience operating across complex SaaS environments, with a focus on consolidation, optimization, and cost reduction\nAbility to identify inefficiencies, prioritize high-impact opportunities, and build durable, maintainable systems\nStrong communication skills and ability to operate cross-functionally with technical and non-technical stakeholders\nExperience mentoring or supporting junior engineers and contributing to a strong engineering culture\nHigh ownership mindset with a focus on measurable impact including efficiency gains, cost reduction, and risk mitigation\n\nFor candidates based in the United States, the pay range(s) for this role is listed below and represents base salary range for non-commissionable roles or on-target earnings (OTE) for commissionable roles. This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at Retool and will be narrowed during the interview process based on a number of factors such as (but not limited to), scope and responsibilities, the candidate’s experience and qualifications, and location.\nAdditional compensation in the form(s) of equity and/or commission are dependent on the position offered. Retool provides a comprehensive benefit plan, including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k). Pay and benefits are subject to change at any time, consistent with the terms of any applicable compensation or benefit plans.\nThe base pay range for this role is $150,000 – $200,000 per year.\n\nRetool offers generous benefits to all employees and hybrid work location.
