Structural Steel Estimator
Job Overview
Position Summary
The Steel Fabrication Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive, and timely cost estimates for structural steel fabrication and erection projects. This role evaluates project requirements, reviews drawings and specifications, performs quantity take-offs, calculates the cost, materials, labor, and time needed to complete steel fabrication projects, solicits subcontractor and supplier pricing, and develops detailed proposals that support project bidding, budgeting, and planning efforts.
Estimating & Cost Analysis
Review architectural and structural drawings, specifications, and project documents to determine scope of work.
Perform detailed material quantity take-offs for structural steel, miscellaneous metals, and related components.
Analyze labor, material, equipment, and subcontract costs to produce accurate estimates.
Prepare comprehensive cost breakdowns and final bid proposals.
Identify cost-saving alternatives, value-engineering opportunities, and potential risks.
Review contracts to verify that the scope of work is accurate, complete, and aligned with the project requirements.
Bid Management
Manage the full bid process from initial review through final submission.
Request and evaluate quotes from suppliers, detailing companies, and subcontractors.
Maintain current pricing databases for materials, fabrication, and erection.
Track bid results, maintain bid logs, and collaborate with management on award decisions.
Technical Review
Coordinate with engineering, project management, and fabrication teams to ensure alignment with estimate assumptions.
Evaluate project constructability, site conditions, and scheduling constraints.
Identify discrepancies, omissions, and conflicts in project documents.
Communication & Coordination
Present estimates to customers and support bid strategy development.
Communicate professionally with clients, general contractors, suppliers, and internal teams.
Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and client consultations as needed.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field (preferred).
3–5+ years of experience in steel estimating, fabrication, or structural construction.
Strong working knowledge of structural steel systems, fabrication methods, and erection processes.
Skills & Competencies
Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, Tekla EPM, FabSuite, OST, etc.).
Strong ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings.
Advanced math, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
Strong communication, time-management, and organizational abilities.
Ability to work under pressure and meet bid deadlines.
Working Conditions
Office-based environment with occasional travel to job sites or pre-bid meetings.
Requires use of computers, estimating software, and blueprint review tools.
May involve extended hours during major bid deadlines.
