Lead Substation Relay Engineer

The Substation Relay Engineer specializes in the design, setting, testing, and maintenance of protective relay systems within high-voltage substations, ensuring grid reliability and safety. They develop relay logic to detect faults (short circuits, overcurrent) and isolate equipment to prevent widespread outages, often working with voltages from 12kV up to 500kV. Supporting some of the largest grid mod projects across the US, they have a long record of delivering complex, grid‑critical transmission, substation, distribution, and generation projects.DescriptionKey ResponsibilitiesDesign & Engineering: Create relay one-lines, three-line AC/DC schematics, and panel wiring diagrams.Settings & Coordination: Perform short circuit and protection coordination studies to calculate and implement relay settings.Testing & Commissioning: Verify functional performance of relays and control circuits during field installation, often using specialized test sets.Analysis: Analyze relay event reports and troubleshoot protection system malfunctions.Regulatory Compliance: Ensure designs meet industry standards (e.g., IEEE, NESC, NERC CIP)ProfileRequired Skills & QualificationsEducation: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.Experience: Usually 3-5+ years in substation protection and control design or field testing.Technical Skills: Proficiency with protection software (e.g., ASPEN, CAPE, ETAP) and familiarity with SEL (Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories) or GE relays.Certifications: Engineer in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license is highly preferredJob OfferCompetitive salary ranging from $125,000 to $175,000 USD per year.Flexibility that works: Choose a hybrid or onsite schedule that fits your life and projectsAccess to medical, dental, and vision benefits.Work on the largest Transmission, Grid Mod project in the USOpportunity to work in a key role within the energy and natural resources sector.This is an excellent opportunity for a dedicated Engineer to make a meaningful impact.
