The Academic Technologist is a crucial team member dedicated to providing real-time support of teaching and learning technologies and consultative design and installation services.
This role will primarily assist with the support of the College’s classroom technology on Hillsdale’s campuses (in Michigan and at remote sites) and online teaching/learning technology, as well as other information technology-related processes, workflows, and resources used by faculty, staff, and students on the College’s campuses.
Responsibilities include break/fix support of classroom hardware and software, design and installation of classroom hardware and software, accessibility knowledge, and superior listening, observational, and research skills.
This role fits an individual who enjoys interacting with people and can effectively resolve problems by patiently listening, asking questions, and pursuing solutions. The position demands excellent communication skills, the ability to explain technological concepts to non-technical people, and the technical acumen to diagnose and resolve classroom technology issues on demand. Essential Job Functions
Academic Technology Operation and Support
Provide rapid break/fix support of classroom hardware, including but not limited to projectors, controllers, touchpanels, amplifiers, speakers, etc.
Install classroom hardware/software.
Assist with classroom technology design.
Assist with related hardware and software setup, documentation, and information delivery as needed.
Track classroom and lab equipment inventory.
Develop KPIs to measure classroom support, hardware performance, and other metrics leading to opportunities for improvement.
Provide secondary support for other academic technology team members as needed.
Cybersecurity
Knowledge of and practice in supporting basic cybersecurity fundamentals from an individual user perspective and an application administrator’s perspective.
Solution Development
Research and recommend hardware and software support options for student computer labs and technology-enhanced classrooms.
Research and solve “how to” software problems in coordination with the Help Desk.
Identify “global” concerns and recommend incorporating solutions into training.
Create instructional documentation to promote user learning of various technologies.
Collaborative Communication
Meet with faculty, staff, and students to observe, listen to concerns, and research potential software, hardware, and process improvements.
Create and build positive relationships with customers, vendors, and external contacts to promote collaboration (sharing best practices and improving hardware and software).
Project Participation
Create and maintain project documentation.
Manage multiple projects with competing priorities and deadlines.
Assist, if needed, with overall project management.
Operational Excellence
Flex work time to support evening and weekend teaching and learning activities.
Travel to other locations to install classroom technology and provide support (less than 20%).
Work independently and in teams while supporting a diverse population.
Log trouble tickets as needed.

Required Qualifications
Education and Experience
An Information Systems, Digital Media, Engineering, Computer Science, AV, or other comparable degree is preferred but not required.
Minimum seven years of experience in an audio-visual, support, or comparable role

AV Knowledge/Hardware Installation
Proficient in hardware installation techniques and troubleshooting (advanced audiovisual technology hardware installation/ troubleshooting preferred)
Experience with Extron control systems desirable
AVIXA CTS and Extron certification desirable
Strong understanding of AV data analytics and KPIs
Network
Foundational understanding of TCP/IP networking in an enterprise environment
Understanding of modern wifi connectivity methods
Ability to perform basic troubleshooting of enterprise-connected wireless devices
Cybersecurity
Strong understanding of modern cybersecurity risks and mitigation practices
Project Participation
Foundational understanding of project management and elements of a successful project
Operating Systems
Proficiency in recent and current Windows operating systems
Proficiency in current Mac OS
Proficiency in supporting Apple iOS devices
Online Meeting Experience
Experience using and supporting Zoom and Microsoft Teams (or other video conferencing tools)
Software Knowledge
Proficiency in Microsoft 365/Microsoft Office Suite
Experience working with Google G Suite applications (Sheets, Docs, etc.)
Proficiency in using cloud-based storage technologies like Box or Google Drive
Proficiency with Help Desk operation and tracking software
Required General Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
Excellent oral and written communication, including reasonable technical writing and documentation capabilities (writing procedures, producing design diagrams, creating “how to” support videos, etc.)
Ability to observe and analyze a business process or workflow
Ability to adapt to and support new and changing technologies.
Ability to work with minimal supervision, manage, and meet deadlines.
Diplomatic and proactive in solving problems.

Physical Demands
The ability to operate office equipment, including photocopiers, scanners, computer equipment, display monitors, etc. The position will require walking, stooping, crouching, or climbing.
