We're a small team and you'll have an opportunity to make a big impact!\nWe are seeking a Senior Database Engineer to shape the data foundation of our transportation platform. You will partner with product and engineering teams to design, build, and maintain the SQL databases and data services that power MS2’s software used by road agencies across 31 states. The role emphasizes performance, reliability, and clear ownership of production data flows. You will solve problems independently and collaborate with an experienced, supportive team.\nResponsibilities:\nCollaborate with engineers, project managers, and stakeholders to deliver reliable, scalable database solutions.\nMentor peers and share best practices for database design and performance.\nMonitor and tune performance, scalability, and security across transactional, ETL, and reporting workloads.\nReview and improve existing designs while ensuring safe, consistent schema, and query changes.\nDefine, measure, and maintain service-level objectives (SLOs) for key data flows using metrics and alerts.\nWork closely with application and QA engineers to validate data integrity and maintain clear boundaries between services\nRequirements\n5+ years of progressive experience as a SQL Database Administrator or Database Engineer maintaining production environments.\nBachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).Strong technical knowledge of SQL Server installations, configuration, and maintenance.\nStrong T-SQL skills, including indexing, execution plans, statistics, partitioning, concurrency control, and performance tuning.\nExperience deploying and evolving databases safely in high-uptime environments.\nPractical experience with observability; metrics, logs, tracing, and alerting tied to SLOs.\nProven track record designing, scaling, and maintaining mission-critical SQL database systems.\nEffective communication and collaboration across engineering and product teams, with strong written and verbal communication.\nPreferred skills / abilities:\nFamiliarity with .NET / C# application stacks and sound judgment on SQL versus application-tier logic.\nExperience with AWS-hosted SQL Server, including backup, restore, and capacity planning.\nExposure to job orchestration or data processing workflows (e.g., ETL scheduling, messaging, or queueing systems).\nExposure to Powershell scripting.\nBenefits\nWe offer a competitive salary and benefits package.\nWe promote a strong work/life balance at MS2.
