Consider joining our impressive team today!\nJOB OVERVIEW\nXcel Engineering is seeking qualified applicants for a Junior Linux Systems Engineer position. As a Junior Linux System Administrator, you will be performing Linux Desktop, Server support under supervision of another Linux System Administrator. You will work with other Linux System Administrators and perform tasks assigned to you by them. You will help troubleshoot various Linux Desktop issues with the customers and help run to ground any issues they might be experiencing.\nESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS\nTroubleshoot various Linux desktop and server related issues.\nInstall, configure and maintain RedHat servers.\nInstall, configure and maintain system software, both commercial packages and various freely available software\nPatch both system and 3rd party vendor software to ensure security and stability. Monitor for patch releases and work with the customers and other admins to ensure the patches are applied in a timely manner.\nEnsure the secure and effective operation of computing systems through compliance with procedures and IT Internal Operating Procedures.\nWork with other system engineers and vendors to resolve both hardware and software issues.\nUtilize Internet resources (mailing lists, blogs, etc.) to resolve problems with open source software.\nDevelop and document procedures for startup, execution, shutdown, backup and recovery.\nMonitor systems performance.\nSupport data storage systems and backup services.\nBASIC QUALIFICATIONS\nUnited States Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance.\nAssociates Degree in Computer Science (or related field) or combined work experience plus education of 3 years.\nExcellent interpersonal skills suitable for user support and the ability to work well with peer system administrators is required.\nExperience with creating scripts using SHELL or other scripting languages is required.\nExperience working with a configuration management\nDemonstrated capabilities to work in a dynamic environment.\nIndividual must be able to work under supervision and take direction to complete tasks assigned.\nGood written and verbal communication skills.\nGood documentation skills, including ability to prepare simple documentation web pages are also desired\nPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS\nInside office environment.\nWorking on a computer for long periods of time.\nMay involve long period of sitting at a desk.\nThe work environment is fast-paced and sometimes involves extreme deadline pressures.\nOTHER DUTIES\nThis job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job.
