This role requires flexibility, teamwork, and the ability to adapt to changing daily needs.\r\nCore Responsibilities – Food Preparation & Service\r\nPrepare and serve evening meals as needed\r\nProvide meals for Main Shelter, Sisterhood, Welcome Center, Inclement Weather Shelter, and employed neighbors as needed\r\nStep in to cook and operate dishwashing equipment when volunteers are unavailable\r\nAssist with menu planning\r\nFollow daily and deep cleaning schedules\r\nComply with health codes and HACCP standards\r\nStore food properly and follow FIFO practices\r\nLabel and discard food appropriately\r\nSecure and inventory kitchen tools daily\r\nVolunteer, Staff & Client Engagement\r\nTrain and support volunteers, team members, and neighbors\r\nTeach basic kitchen and cleaning skills as needed\r\nMaintain a positive and respectful environment\r\nSupport individuals with dietary needs and religious restrictions\r\nInventory & Coordination\r\nTrack donated and purchased supplies\r\nDocument donations\r\nAssist other departments with meal support as needed\r\nTeam & Organizational Responsibilities\r\nAttend meetings and supervision sessions\r\nAssist with staff and volunteer training as needed\r\nSupport operations during extreme inclement weather\r\nParticipate in annual events as needed\r\nWork at least one holiday per year\r\nPerformance Expectations\r\nTeam-Level:\r\nWeekly inspections completed\r\nPass health and safety checks\r\nResolve issues within two weeks\r\nExecute weekly meal schedule\r\nIndividual-Level:\r\nServe meals on time\r\nMaintain a clean, inspection-ready kitchen\r\nQualifications\r\nRequired Certifications\r\nFood Service Manager Certification (One week upon hire or 4 weeks after hire)\r\nCivil Rights Training Certification (needed annually)\r\nEducation & Experience:\r\nHigh school diploma or GED\r\nFood service experience required\r\nSkills & Abilities\r\nStrong customer service and communication\r\nCultural awareness and sensitivity\r\nBasic computer skills\r\nAbility to lift up to 50 lbs\r\nAbility to work in fast-paced environments\r\nAbility to manage stress and de-escalate situations\r\nPosition Overview\r\nThis role combines kitchen operations, teamwork, and community service to provide consistent, nutritious meals in a supportive environment.\r\nAustin Street Center is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer.
