The Electronics Engineer designs and builds telescope,subsystem, and facilityelectronics hardware; and supports installation and test of suchhardware. Work isperformed primarily at the Lowell Discovery Telescope (LDT) site. Thisposition reports tothe LDT Engineering Manager.ResponsibilitiesThe electronics engineer shall design, procure, test, install, andmaintain electronic components,equipment and control systems for Lowell Observatory telescopes. Theprimary duties shallinclude testing and troubleshooting electronics and control systems anddesign of printed circuitboards. Other expected design tasks include layout of cables andcabinets, component sizing andselection, and creation of design documentation. Procurement activitiesinclude componentselection, soliciting and reviewing bids, and inspection andverification of incoming components.The EE shall participate in assembly and testing of equipment to verifyfunction and performanceand assist with installation and debug of equipment at the telescopesite. Maintenance activitiesinclude preventative maintenance and inspections, trouble shooting, andgenerating operationsand maintenance procedures. The EE shall occasionally support nightoperations in a technicalsupport capacity and when required, provide systems training totelescope operators.QualificationsThe electronics engineer must be self-motivated with attention to detailand able tocomplete tasks on schedule.They must possess excellent interpersonal skills and ability tocommunicate effectively,both orally and in writing.They must be willing to take on new tasks and duties as needed.Education/ExperienceThe electronics engineer shall possess a degree in electronicsengineering technology, BSin Electrical Engineering, or equivalent training, and a minimum of fiveyears relevant2 \| P a g eexperience, advanced degree is a plus.Experience should include maintenance and/or construction ofastronomical telescopeFacilities Or Other Complex Technical Facilities. Experience Should Spana broad range oftechnologies; from low voltage analog to logic-level digital, to 480volt three-phasepower.They should be familiar with sensors such as charge-coupled devices,resistancetemperature detectors, encoders and load cells, and motor controllersincluding stepperdrives, brushless direct-current amplifiers, and three-phase variablefrequency drives.Knowledge of astronomical instrumentation, scientific detectors,cryogenic vacuumsystems, networking principles, and precision optomechanical controlsare a plus.They should be proficient with MS Office software package, schematiccapture, andschematic layout.Ability to read and create engineering drawings, data sheets,schematics, & wiringdiagrams required.Experience Should Include Taking Circuits From Requirements Tocompletion of simpleprinted circuit boards, cabling, cabinets, and facility wiring.Familiarity with National Instruments LabVIEW software is desired.WORKING CONDITIONSThe Electronics Engineer works largely at the LDT, located roughly 45miles southeast of Flagstaff, AZ atan altitude of approximately 7800 feet elevation. Environmentalconditions can be unpredictable withtemperature ranges varying between 20 and +90 F. Inclement winterweather conditions can also beexpected which will require travel to/from the telescope in occasionallysnowy, icy, and/or rainyconditions; willingness and ability to drive safely in inclementco nditions is required.This position requires a moderate degree of standing, walking, bending,handling, reaching, grasping,driving, and repetitive motions. The role includes operating small andheavy machinery and equipment.Duties may also require driving vehicles, including at night.
