This position will require a high degree of technical ability and creativity to develop solutions for a novel generation of consumables. The incumbent will work with a cross‑functional team of engineers, scientists, and biologists in a highly collaborative, results‑driven research and development group.\n\nDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES\n\nDesign, fabricate, and characterize microfluidic devices for integration with biological assays including but not limited to ELISA and molecular assays.\n\nIdentify opportunities for improving performance, reliability, and cost‑effectiveness in future generations of products.\n\nContribute to the development of requirements and specifications.\n\nContribute to the development, implementation, and documentation of test protocols for both informal and formal design testing.\n\nInteract with outside vendors and MSD's supplier quality department to source and qualify parts and materials.\n\nPresent designs, engineering issues, and solutions to senior management as required.\n\nSpecific duties will vary depending upon departmental requirements.\n\nEXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS\n\nBachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, Materials Science, or related field.\n\nAdvanced degree preferred.\n\nMinimum 5 years of industrial experience strongly preferred.\n\nExperience programming for instrument control and data analysis (LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python) strongly preferred.\n\nExperience in an ISO, cGMP, or other regulated environment preferred.\n\nKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES\n\nDemonstrated proficiency with fluidic chip design using CAD packages (AutoCAD, SolidWorks or equivalent).\n\nAbility to analyze and interpret experimental data using software tools (e.g., Excel, JMP, GraphPad Prism) required.\n\nDemonstrated proficiency in simulation software such as COMSOL or Ansys‑Fluent preferred.\n\nWorking knowledge of the manufacture of FDA regulated devices is a plus.\n\nStrong engineering fundamentals and analytical abilities.\n\nExcellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.\n\nEffectively communicate issues/problems and results that impact timelines, accuracy and reliability of project data.\n\nExcellent organizational and bench skills.\n\nComfortable designing and performing laboratory experiments for testing microfluidic devices.\n\nDemonstrated propensity to be creative, collaborative, proactive, and self‑motivated in the execution and completion of assigned tasks.\n\nProven track record in developing and delivering microfluidic systems (consumables and instruments).\n\nKnowledge of process development, material selection, and surface treatment/functionalization for microfluidic devices.\n\nKnowledge of design for volume manufacturing processes.\n\nUnderstanding of design of microfluidic features including:\n\nMixing elements and strategies.\n\nCapillary microfluidic features and strategies.\n\nFluidic inlet and outlet integration.\n\nSensor integration.\n\nSeparation or sorting elements and techniques desired.\n\nBubble traps and similar mitigations desired.\n\nPassive and active valving desired.\n\nUnderstanding of design and prototyping fabrication processes including:\n\nMicrofabrication.\n\nEmbossing.\n\nPlastic bonding.\n\nInjection molding desired.\n\nEtching desired.\n\nRoll to roll converting desired.\n\nSoft lithography desired.\n\nPHYSICAL DEMANDS\nWhile performing the duties of this job, the individual is frequently required to sit and stand for long periods. Employees may qualify for a discretionary or non‑discretionary bonus in addition to their base salary.
