Garden Center Retail Staff
POSITION OVERVIEW
Hornbaker Gardens is seeking friendly, plant-loving individuals to join our Garden Center retail team. This role supports daily retail operations by assisting customers, maintaining plants and displays, operating point-of-sale (POS) registers to process customer transactions accurately, and receiving and merchandising giftware and garden décor. Gardening knowledge is helpful but not required; a strong work ethic, excellent customer service skills, and comfort handling payments are essential.
POSITION DETAILS
Position Type: Full-Time or Part-Time, Seasonal
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (hourly)
Reports To: Retail Manager
Work Schedule: Day shift; mid-March-October; weekend availability required
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The following duties represent the essential functions of this position:
Customer Service & Sales
Greet and engage all visitors in a friendly and professional manner
Assist customers in finding, selecting, and purchasing plants and products
Operate point-of-sale (POS) registers, handle cash and electronic payments, and accurately process customer transactions
Plant Care & Merchandising
Water, deadhead, and maintain plants as needed
Maintain gardens around checkout area by weeding and deadheading
Create attractive plant displays
Store Appearance & Support
Maintain cleanliness and organization of retail and display areas
Assist with receiving, pricing and merchandising garden-related products
Help load customer purchases and provide assistance as needed
Team & Culture Support
Work collaboratively with team members across all departments
Prioritize assisting visitors while balancing plant care tasks
Represent Hornbaker Gardens positively by wearing nametag and company apparel
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent
Strong customer service and communication skills
Positive attitude and willingness to learn
Reliable work ethic
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in retail, customer service, or gardening
Interest in learning plant names, varieties, and care requirements
Ability to multitask in a fast-paced, outdoor retail environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & REQUIREMENTS

Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry plants and materials of varying weights
Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and stand for extended periods
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Pay Scale: $15.00 – $20.00 per hour, commensurate with experience
Benefits may include:
PTO accrual of 1 hour per 40 hours worked
