Assembly Technician

Location: In Person — 4620 Henry St, Pittsburgh, PACompany: Advanced Optronics Inc.Team Size: 5OverviewAre you ready to help develop a revolutionary medical sensor technology from the ground up? We are an innovative seed-stage startup that delivers miniaturized medical devices leveraging our thin-film microfabricated sensors 10x thinner than a human hair. We are seeking a hands-on technician to execute microdevice fabrication, assembly, and packaging processes for our novel MEMS devices. You will be a critical contributor to our R&D operations, responsible for precision benchwork that turns wafers into functional, testable prototypes. You will work directly under a stereo microscope performing a range of delicate assembly and processing steps on sub-millimeter flexible devices. We are looking for someone with steady hands, meticulous attention to detail, and the patience to execute delicate processes consistently — prior microelectronics experience is a plus but not required.Job Type / CompensationHourly, ($18–$30/hr, depending on experience)Roles & Responsibilities1. Microdevice Assembly & Bonding (40%): Prepare components and fixtures, operate precision assembly tooling, and perform alignment and bonding of small-scale devices under a camera-mounted microscope. Maintain tight dimensional tolerances and safe handling throughout.2. Electrochemical Processing & Packaging (40%): Prepare chemical solutions, load samples into electrochemical cells, operate precision electronic equipment, and perform cleaning, testing, and carrier packaging for safe transport between process steps.3. Documentation & Process Feedback (20%): Complete batch records and traveler sign-offs for each device. Flag process deviations, yield issues, or failure modes and contribute observations back to the engineering team to drive process refinements.Candidate ProfileEducation & Experience:No specific degree required. Current or recent students in engineering, chemistry, physics, materials science, or biomedical disciplines are encouraged to apply, as are technicians with relevant prior work experience.Demonstrated hands-on lab or benchwork experience (academic, industrial, or equivalent).Required Technical Skills:Fine Manipulation: Excellent fine-motor skills and comfort performing precise work under a stereo microscope for extended periods.SOP Execution: Ability to follow detailed written procedures precisely and reproducibly, with careful attention to process parameters and in-process checks.Organization: Able to track small parts, in-process inventory, and batch documentation without losing or mixing up samples.Basic Lab Practices: Comfort with standard lab safety (PPE, chemical handling) and basic bench tools (tweezers, scalpels, pipettes, multimeters).Desired Technical Skills:Specific experience with microelectronics, MEMS, flexible electronics, or semiconductor assembly and packaging.Familiarity with precision benchtop electronic instrumentation or basic electrochemistry.Experience with cleanroom protocols, ESD-sensitive handling, or microscope-based assembly workflows.Soldering or microassembly experience.Project & Communication SkillsMeticulous & Patient: You take pride in careful, repeatable execution and don't cut corners on precision work, even on the tenth unit of the day.A Natural Problem-Solver: You are driven by technical curiosity and notice when something looks off, rather than mechanically following procedure through a failure.Thrives in Ambiguity: You are comfortable with the fast-paced, dynamic nature of a startup and can effectively manage competing priorities. An Excellent Communicator: You can clearly articulate what you observed at the bench — yields, failure modes, process quirks — to a diverse, interdisciplinary team. The leadership team at Advanced Optronics is committed to the growth of team members. You will benefit from direct mentorship of our R&D engineers and exposure to the full device development lifecycle. Previous contractors and interns have either gone on to pursue successful career paths elsewhere based on what they have gained and learned during their time with us, or grown within the company to assume higher-level roles at Advanced Optronics. Our environment is built on collaboration and excellence, creating a space where individuals are challenged and supported to achieve their full potential.
