This position is responsible for embedding tissue samples, loading and unloading surgical specimens on processors, performing processor and stainer chemical changes, maintaining assigned work areas, and assisting the Histology department as needed.\n\nRESPONSIBILITIES\n\nEmbedding tissue samples\n\nLoading and unloading tissue processors\n\nFiling blocks and slides as needed\n\nPerforming quality control documentation\n\nMaintaining clean and organized equipment and work areas\n\nAssisting with processor and stainer chemical changes\n\nSupporting the Histology department as assigned\n\nHandling minimal hazardous waste in accordance with safety procedures\n\nEmployees are responsible for following all company policies and procedures. These policies and procedures include adherence to regulatory standards, including CAP, CLIA, OSHA, safety requirements, confidentiality standards, and all applicable laboratory procedures.\n\nESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS\n\nEmbeds tissue samples according to established laboratory procedures.\n\nLoads and unloads processor tissue samples.\n\nFiles blocks and slides as needed.\n\nAssists the Histology department as assigned.\n\nPerforms daily quality control documentation as required.\n\nMaintains equipment and supplies in clean condition.\n\nTransfers materials from stainers and tissue processors to appropriate 90‑day accumulation containers in accordance with safety and hazardous waste procedures.\n\nTroubleshoots and assists with problem solving related to daily workflow.\n\nMaintains communication with the Histology Supervisor and/or Histology Manager.\n\nFollows all safety procedures when handling patient specimens, chemicals, hazardous waste, and laboratory equipment.\n\nUses appropriate personal protective equipment, including eye protection, masks, lab coats, and gloves when required.\n\nMaintains attention to detail while performing repetitive and time‑sensitive tasks.\n\nMultitasks effectively in a fast‑paced laboratory environment.\n\nPerforms other related duties as assigned.\n\nPHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENT\n\nFrequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and repetitive hand motions.\n\nMust be able to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds routinely to move objects.\n\nNear visual acuity required for specimen handling, embedding, filing, computer use, labeling, and documentation.\n\nEmployee may be exposed to blood products, patient specimens, knife cuts, hazardous waste, chemical fumes, and other laboratory‑related hazards.\n\nDaily functions may include incidental exposure to hazards associated with laboratory equipment, chemicals, reagents, biological specimens, sharps, and waste handling.\n\nAppropriate precautionary measures must be followed at all times.\n\nUse of protective gear such as eye protection, masks, gloves, lab coats, and other personal protective equipment may be required.\n\nHazardous waste training is required.\n\nEQUIPMENT USED\n\nMicrowave tissue processors\n\nConventional tissue processors\n\nEmbedding center\n\nStainers, including H&E\n\nCoverslipper\n\nTypical laboratory equipment\n\nComputer\n\nLaboratory Information System or related laboratory systems\n\nSUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES\nNone.\n\nMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS\n\nHigh School Diploma or GED required.\n\nPrior laboratory, healthcare, specimen processing, histology, embedding, or related work experience preferred.\n\nAbility to accurately enter and verify information in laboratory systems.\n\nAbility to follow written procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.\n\nStrong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast‑paced laboratory environment.\n\nAbility to communicate effectively with supervisors, managers, and laboratory team members.\n\nWORK ENVIRONMENT\nThe work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the duties of this job.
