Shipyard Design Manager

An established U.S.-based shipbuilding organization is seeking a Shipyard Design Manager to lead the technical development of marine construction projects from concept through delivery. This role is responsible for managing multidisciplinary engineering teams and ensuring all ship designs meet regulatory, technical, budgetary, and production requirements. This position works closely with project management, production, and clients to deliver high-quality vessel designs on schedule. Responsibilities:Lead, manage, and review all functional and detailed design deliverables, including structural, outfitting, and production drawings (e.g., General Arrangements, midship sections).Direct engineering efforts for new vessel construction and repair projects.Own and guide the overall technical solution for assigned projects.Identify, assess, and escalate technical risks to senior engineering leadership.Develop, mentor, and train engineering and drafting personnel.Ensure all designs and deliverables comply with applicable Classification Society rules (e.g., ABS, DNV), national and international regulations (including SOLAS), and client specifications.Collaborate with project managers and production teams to resolve design conflicts during vessel construction.Manage design documentation, including 3D models, design reviews, technical specifications, work instructions, and change resolutions.Lead design reviews, client presentations, and technical discussions.Support business development efforts, including concept design and technical proposal development for new vessel programs.Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or a related field).5-10+ years of experience in ship design or shipyard engineering, with demonstrated leadership responsibility.Working knowledge of naval architecture, structures, propulsion and auxiliary systems, electrical systems, and mission systems.Strong understanding of ship systems such as structural design, piping, HVAC, and marine electrical systems.Proficiency with AutoCAD and ship design/production software (e.g., ShipConstructor). Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and electronic document management systems.Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership abilities.
