Senior Scientist, Oligonucleotide (PMO) Process Development

The OpportunityWe are seeking a Senior Scientist experienced in organic synthesis, route selection, and process optimization to join a team dedicated to the development of liquid-phase processes to manufacture phosphorodiamidate morpholino oligonucleotides. The role involves hands-on laboratory work—including designing and performing organic transformations, product purification, and isolation—as well as program leadership and CMO management activities. This position reports to the Sr Director of Oligonucleotides Development and is part of Avidity's CMC/Technical Operations team.What You Will ContributeExecute experiments enabling the determination of processing conditions for the manufacture of phosphorodiamidate morpholino oligonucleotides in liquid phase.Design and assess various routes of synthesis to prepare phosphorodiamide morpholino oligonucleotides, including via fragment assembly.Design efficient processes enabling control of PMI and product impurity profile.Determine data-based path forward to optimize and lock manufacturing processes.Constructively and effectively evaluate experiments performed by other process development scientists.Understand first principles of chromatography, UF/DF unit operation, and lyophilization and be able to carry out those unit operations in the laboratory.Design chromatographic separation to purify phosphorodiamide morpholino oligonucleotides.Analyze in-process control and isolated product collected samples via chromatography, mass spectroscopy, and NMR techniques.Perform critical review of manufacturing documentation and engage in process transfer activities.Accurately document experiments in electronic laboratory notebooks and author technical summaries and study reports.Present data, provide updates in team and CMC meetings, as well as impact the work of other process development scientists.Grow into PMO program leadership role.Ensure work is conducted in compliance with applicable regulatory requirements (FDA, EMA, ICH), GMP principles (as applicable), and internal quality systems.Collaborate cross-functionally with Analytical Development, Quality, and Project Management teams.Contribute to the company's core values (agile, visionary, integrated, and diverse).What We SeekPh.D. in Chemistry with at least 5 years of experience.Demonstrated experience in organic synthesis and process development.Prior experience with laboratory techniques including LC-MS/MS, HPLC, and NMR.Proven ability to thrive and enable success in a cross-functional and collaborative environment.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to facilitate constructive, expedient problem-solving.Ability to multi-task, manage conflict, and work in a fast-paced environment.What We Will Provide To YouThe base salary range for this role is $119,700 – $222,300.Avidity offers competitive compensation and benefits, which include an annual bonus opportunity and a 401(k) with an employer match.
