Respect.Primary FunctionPrimary Functions and Job DetailsOperates and performs preventive maintenance on heavy motor equipment.Principle Duties & ResponsibilitiesFollows safe practices in the performance of duties.Operates a tank truck flusher.Operates small and medium size backhoes, rubber tire front end loaders, track loaders and other related construction equipment in a variety of public work projects.Operates road rollers in street reconstruction projects.Operates a paving machine in placing various courses of asphalt in the reconstruction and maintenance of streets.Operates a snow loader when removing heavy snow accumulations.Operates a dump truck with or without plow in excess of 26,000 G.V.W. in the control and removal of snow.Performs routine maintenance on motorized equipment as required.May oversee and assist a small group of laborers and operators in loading an unloading trucks, patching streets and other manual laboring tasks as required.Operates a truck mounted snowplow and drives a dump truck with a trailer.Performs manual labor involving loading and unloading trucks, digging of ditches, felling and trimming of trees, cutting brush, and similar tasks.Operates a rubber tire loader in general maintenance work and snow removal operations.Uses a jackhammer and other power-driven equipment.Bureau of Sewer Collections:Safely operates and maintains a Vactor truck in order to clean and maintain components of the wastewater collection system.Bureau of StreetsOperates a Street Sweeper and fills in responsibilities of Sweeper Operator as required by management for business operation needs.Examples Of Essential DutiesPosition QualificationsKnowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of safe practices related to Public Works.Ability to operate a vehicle on private and public streets is required.Skill in the use of hand tools, power and motorized equipment.Proven ability to work well under pressure and to maintain positive interactions is required.Positive interpersonal skills are required.Proven ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment is required.Proven ability to read, write, speak and comprehend English is required.Proven ability to work as part of a team and to collaborate successfully with others is required.Proven ability to adapt to new or changed situations and to show flexibility in making improvements in work processes and operations is required.Proven ability to exhibit customer-centered behaviors and to focus on customer needs is required.Proven ability to commit to excellence in service and to continuous improvement is required.Typical QualificationsEducation, Training and ExperienceGraduation from High School or completion of a GED is required.A minimum of two (2) years documented on-the-job experience in operating heavy motor equipment on a regular basis is required.A minimum of one (1) year documented experience in making mechanical repairs and adjustments and servicing heavy motor equipment is required.Licenses and CertificatesBureau of Streets:Possession of a valid Class B commercial driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is required. Class A commercial driver's license is preferred. Tanker endorsement and/or ability to obtain the tanker endorsement within 3 months of hire.Bureau of Sewer Collections:EO II at the Wastewater Treatment Plant must possess a Class B commercial driver's license with a tanker endorsement and/or the ability to obtain the tanker endorsement within 3 months of hire.Knowledge, Skills And AbilitiesEnvironmental ConditionsIndoors, environmentally controlled.Outdoor, exposed to inclement weather and extreme temperature.Exposure to noise, pollution.Safety Equipment Used or NeededPersonal Protective Equipment such as hardhats, gloves, safety glasses, ear protection, rain gear, steel toed safety shoes, rain boots and respirators.CommentsWorks around motorized or moving equipment and machinery.Requires working long hours and must be available to handle emergency situations and weather events after hours, weekends and holidays as required.Requires the use of hand tools.Requires the use of air tools, hydraulic tools, and/or electric tools such as jackhammers, pavement saws, tampers.Knowledge, skills and/or abilities assessment tests may be conducted as part of the position screening process.This description was prepared to indicate the kinds of activities and levels of work difficulty required of positions in this class.
