Engineer/Conductor (Day and Night Shift)
Description of Position
Fundamentals of this position consist of directing the movement of railcars within the facility from one track to another in conjunction with an engineer and locomotive as instructed to facilitate the loading/unloading of railcars and the arrival and departure of trains.
II. Qualifications Standards
Individual must have the ability to maintain a focus on safety while working around moving heavy equipment. Must maintain a valid driver’s license and be able to pass all background checks and drug/alcohol screenings.
III. Organizational Relationships
Conductors will report directly to yardmaster/facility manager/regional manager and /or general manager.
IV. Job Requirements / Responsibilities
Must be able to communicate (read, speak and write) in English to meet FRA requirements.
Must conform to AAR/FRA guidelines at a minimum as applicable.
Participation in daily safety and job briefings
Perform radio tests before any work begins
Inspect all equipment at the start of the shift
Use proper radio communication while working
Control the movement of trains and engines
Throw and inspect switches
Know if a track is lined in or out; or if a switch is lined against the movement
Hook up air hoses and open/close angle cocks
Uncouple railcars and engines
Identify that flags and derails are up or down on all tracks
Ride railcars and engines
Get on/off railcars and engines
Protect shoves
Talk to train crews on the radio with proper radio communication
Properly secure engines when work is complete
