Driver and Messenger

Summary Job Description: Transports individuals to and from various locations and/or delivers documents, files, equipment, supplies, food, clothing; etc. and performs related work as required. Under immediate supervision, an employee in this class operates an automobile for the purpose of chauffeuring individuals and delivering documents, files, equipment and supplies. Instructions are usually received in the form of written or oral directives for specific pickups and deliveries to be made by the employee. Work occasionally requires dealing with emotionally disturbed persons and the employee is expected to handle all situations in a calm and effective manner. Work is reviewed through oral and written reports. Principle Responsibilities: Drives a motor vehicle for the purpose of chauffeuring children under the agency's care to offices, courts, medical facilities, foster homes, and other facilities as needed. Transports other individuals as requested and approved. Picks up documents, files, office supplies, food, clothing, or other items and delivers same to agency offices, foster homes, courts, government agencies, or other locations. Assists in supervising children who are being transported and in the loading of items being transported into and out of vehicles. Responsible for the care and cleanliness of vehicle. Parking summonses received are the driver's responsibility. Special Qualifications: Thorough knowledge of motor vehicle laws, rules and regulations. Ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of the geography of New York City and Long Island. Ability to operate an automobile safely and efficiently in traffic and under adverse weather conditions. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to understand and follow the laws, rules and regulations pertaining to the care and safety of children under the care and supervision of the agency. Minimum Requirements: Possession of a valid New York State driver's license. Must be able to lift a minimum of 30 pounds. Travel Requirements: Travel to all locations.
