Assistant/Associate Planner

Assistant or Associate PlannerGood City Company is a California-based planning and consulting firm serving 25+ public agency clients across planning, housing, economic development, and city management. We are seeking an Assistant or Associate Planner to join our team.The position will focus on current planning and development review. The position will also assist our Advance Planning Manager with policy planning documents and may assist our Economic Development Lead with economic development strategy plans. Depending on applications received, Good City may opt to hire two planners. The positions will be an integral part of the larger Good City Company team and will involve the assignment of projects from several of our public sector clients.Responsibilities:Manage small to mid-size development applications, including commercial, office, and small to mid-size residential projectsServe as an assistant project manager for complex development applications and long-range policy documents, such as specific plans, neighborhood plans, zoning ordinance updates, and general plan element updatesWrite staff reports and make public presentationsReview CEQA documents and manage environmental consultantsRespond to inquiries from the public regarding development projects and long-range planning initiativesHelp staff community outreach meetingsResearch and help prepare reports and documents regarding advance planning policy topics, including General Plan amendments, precise plan updates, rezoning requests, and economic development strategy plansAssist our housing policy team with Housing Element updates and Housing Element implementationPerform site visits relating to new development applicationsAttend and present at Board, Commission, Committee, and Council meetingsRequirements:Minimum of two years of experience (Assistant Planner) or three to four years of experience (Associate Planner) directly related to the job duties described above, with a particular focus on current planning and development reviewBay Area-based with the ability to work in person (typically 3x per week) within our office or a city hallExperience working at the front counter of City Hall, including providing information to architects, property owners, and community members. We will also consider applicants who have worked on the \"other side of the counter\" (architects, developers, etc.)Knowledge of standard development review processes and local government operations and proceduresAbility to interpret and apply land use regulations, including general plan, specific plan, zoning code, and related regulationsExperience interacting with other departments within City Hall, including public works, building department, and parks, and the ability to take recommendations from these departments and compile the information into publicly reviewed documentsAbility to review architectural plans, compare those plans to applicable codes, and make recommendations to an applicant while meeting review deadlines set by the Permit Streamlining ActStrong written and verbal communication skillsBachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in urban or regional planning, architecture, or a closely related fieldAICP or progress toward AICP certification a plusExperience with GIS and Adobe Creative Cloud apps a plusIndustryGovernment AdministrationEmployment TypeFull TimeCompensation and Benefit SummarySalary Range: $70,000-$125,000 annual salaryFull medical, dental, and vision coverageTwo weeks of paid vacation (+ one week of sick pay)401(k) contributions after the first full calendar year with the companyAnnual bonuses (most years, dependent on company profit)Ongoing training and development opportunitiesIf you meet these requirements and are looking to join a dynamic team, please submit your resume and cover letter for consideration.
