Position Summary JOB DESCRIPTION The Custodian I completes sanitation of restrooms, showers, and locker facilities and replenishes supplies. This person sweeps, mops, or vacuums floor surfaces, and removes trash from all assigned areas. The Custodian I also cleans chalkboards, walls, and other items as required and cleans, polishes, and moves furniture and equipment for special events when needed. This person meets with customers for feedback on work performed, may lock and unlock buildings, and cleans, polishes, and stores equipment after use.Rice University's custodial department is looking for a flexible and motivated person who likes and enjoys cleaning. Additionally, this person needs to be able to get along well with others, be responsible, and be committed to keeping their assigned areas clean, meeting our department's cleaning standards. Finally, the ideal candidate would be respectful, responsible, and innovative, always looking for different ways to improve the cleaning of the building, and be passionate about customer service. Workplace RequirementsThis is a full-time, benefits-eligible position, and the salary starts at $15.00 an hour. Non-exempt (hourly) positions under FLSA are eligible for overtime.This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in person. The work schedule available is 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Per Rice policy 440 , work arrangements may be subject to change.This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to campus, provide the essential services designated, and work.Minimum RequirementsNo formal education or experience is requiredSkillsMust be able to speak and understand basic EnglishGood interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team with others Ability to follow directionsPreferencesHS Diploma or equivalentSix months of previous custodial/housekeeping experienceGood interpersonal skillsEssential FunctionsCleans showers, restroom floors, lavatories, fixtures, kitchenettes, public spaces, offices, laboratories, etc. Replenishes paper supplies Vacuums, sweeps, dusts and mops floors Cleans and polishes furniture, glass, doors, mirrors, walls and other surfacesRemoves trash Identifies and reports needed repairs Assists other custodians with work as needed Performs all other duties assignedAdditional FunctionsWhen short of staff, as part of the daily cleaning assignments, the custodial staff will be required to clean multiple buildings throughout the work dayMeets with customers for feedback on work performed Documents work performed on a work order including tasks done and hours charged Moves furniture and equipment to facilitate cleaning or set up for special events when needed May lock and unlock buildings as requiredMust perform Cleanology inspections on a quarterly basis and maintain an 80% or above rating Working ConditionsWork Environment: Primarily an indoor work environment in a variety of university settings, which may include offices, laboratories, classrooms, athletic facilities, covered walkways, etc. May be exposed to temperature and weather extremes when working under covered walkways or in facilities that are not climate-controlled. Work Hazards: Some work may occur at heightened elevations on ladders or scaffolding, or in wet areas. Possible exposure to toxic and caustic chemicals.Work Schedule: 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., or 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is a possibility of overtime weekly, and overtime may be mandatory based on the circumstances or emergencies.
